I wouldn't be surprised. Cleland has went absolutely nuts since losing his Senate seat.

Is Cleland Rather's "unimpeachable source"?
I can always hope so!

CBS will never admit anything unless faced with overwhelming evidence of the contrary.

Cleland is in the mix. I don't think he's the braintrust on this, though. I don't even think Carville or Begala would be this stupid/nasty/criminal...

What would happen if the Unstoppable Force (freerepublic) meets the Immovable Object (Cleland's wheelchair)?

There's no way that Dan Rather was talking about Burkett(sp?) when he claimed the source was unimpeachable. There are other people - I suspect in the Kerry Campaign or in the DNC - who vouched for the authenticity of these documents. If CBS doesn't care, others in the media do, as does the blogosphere. The true facts will be known. I just hope we find out before the election so as to have maximum impact on Kerry, Rather, the DNC et.al.

Max Cleland is a bitter man. He'd certainly be willing to turn the screws against Bush.

Ex-guardsman gave Bush records to Cleland

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A retired Texas National Guard officer mentioned as a source of disputed documents on President Bush's service in the Guard said he passed along information to a former senator working with Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry's campaign.

In an Aug. 21 e-mail to a list of Texas Democrats, Bill Burkett said after getting through "seven layers of bureaucratic kids" in the Kerry campaign, he talked with former Sen. Max Cleland, Georgia Democrat, about information that would counter criticism of Mr. Kerry's Vietnam War service.

Is Max Cleland the Missing Link in the CBS Docudrama?

What was in this AP report that seems to be slipping under just about everyone’s radar screens? Bill Burkett, the former Guardsman from Texas and the man now being fingered as the source of the forged ''Memogate'' documents, has admitted that after plowing through several layers of ''bureaucratic kids'' he contacted John Kerry’s good friend, the former senator from Georgia, Max Cleland. Burkett told Cleland that he had information that the Kerry campaign could use to ''counter the swift boat ads.''

Mr. Burkett stated he asked Cleland ''if they wanted to counterattack or ride this to ground and outlast it, not spending any money.'' Burkett reported that Cleland told him that they wanted to counterattack. Bill Burkett states he then sent what he had to Max Cleland, and that was the last Burkett heard from anyone involved with the Kerry campaign. The implications of this report are enormous. If these forged documents can be traced from Bill Burkett to John Kerry via Max Cleland, members of the Kerry campaign--if not Kerry himself--could be under criminal investigation for passing forged government documents.

Does anybody out there have ideas for further pursuit?

Check out video from that ill-advised Rassman/Cleland performance in Crawford. Maybe Burkett was there too! Well, probably not, anyway whoever thought up that show should be fired by Kerry.

Max Cleland said that he was contacted by Bill Burkett and redirected him to the Kerry campaign.

I believe that Van Os gave Cleland cell phone # to Burkett and Burkett ended up speaking to the Kerry campaign which is the "unimpeachable source". After the heat started to build on the 60 minutes forgery, Rather contacted the "unimpeachable source" looking for help. Then the "unimpeachable source" told Rather where they got the docs from.

Rather would die before telling the truth to the American people. If the people knew CBS and Kerry are working together and fabricating federal documents to unseat a wartime president, then all three (Kerry, Rather and CBS) would be finished.

Does anyone recall the exact words used by CBS in regards to the ex-military person that was the source of these documents? I tried to do a search and couldn't find the exact comment made by CBS in regards to this. I know they stated "unimpeachable," but didn't they also claim that the documents came from a retired military person? While Cleland isn't retired, he certainly is an ex-military person.

Max has been a bitter old man since we voted him out. He grabbed onto the "Unpatriotic" spin put out by his party. He has allowed himself to be used in the most humiliating way by the dems.

He became their dog & pony show.

The saddest part is, he is so wrapped up in his own bitterness that he does not relalize how kerry & co keep poor little amputee on a string so they can use him when needed.

How many times can one allow himself to he used and humilitaed before he catcehs on.

Did Rather ever say Burkett was the source?

Bear with me. I recall the CBS memo saying they had been told the source was a retired gardsman, but after talking to Burkett they were no longer confident in the source.

Now parse this carefully. If CBS received the documents form an unimpeachable source -- Cleland -- and Cleland said he got hem from a guardsman, then that guardsman could be Burkett.

And after talking to Burkett, CBS says they were misled about the source. Clintonian parsing.
