Thousands of listeners rose, cheered and clapped wildly as the Dalai Lama not only called for peace, but declared war obsolete.
"My interests in the future, my economic prosperity, depend very much on others, including my enemy -- and theirs depends on me," the revered head of Tibetan Buddhism told nearly 13,000 listeners Sunday in Sunrise.
"In ancient times, nations would only think `my interests,' then destroy the enemy and enrich themselves," he continued. "Today, with modern economy and ecology, everything is interdependent. Our interests are the same as others'.
"So I think the concept of war is out of date."
It was a message the listeners at the Office Depot Center clearly hungered to hear.
"It was inspirational, to see that someone is really for peace, instead of war or greed," said art dealer Lisa Wolsky, who had driven from Tavernier in the Keys to hear the Tibetan leader. "Everything he said was so basic, fundamental."
The address, "World Peace Through Inner Peace," was his second during a five-day stay in South Florida.
"The 20th century was a century of violence and bloodshed, and violence failed to solve problems," said the Dalai Lama, who lost hundreds of thousands of his countrymen to Chinese invaders. "It only created suffering. The 21st century should be a century of dialogue.
"Even your enemy is worthy of respect. Despite disagreements, you live together on the planet."
The Office Depot Center crowd was slightly older and more diverse than Saturday listeners at his Nova Southeastern University talk. It also attracted broad regional interest, with people coming from Jacksonville, Tampa, Naples, Clearwater and West Palm Beach. Others came from New York, California, even several dozen from Aruba.

Shouldn't he be telling us this is all an illusion?
The 20th century and every century leading up to it had violence and bloodshed and now things are going to change? Because we are interdependent? Who is writing this stuff, Dan Rather?
Ahh... the all-knowing, all-wise Dalai Lamer.
If he is so wise and all-knowing, why isn't his country free?
And who asked for his worthless opinons anyway?
LOL... I wonder if he's sitting (cross-legged, of course) under that ol' Oak Tree.
Well, I am certainly relieved! What was I worried about?
Yeah. Whatever.
It's too bad that evil never seems to learn the lesson and that evil is never above exerting power over those who are weak into complying with its will. The only language evil understands is the will to use force to defend both ourselves and others. If we are not willing to wage war against evil, we ultimately allow evil to run roughshod over all that is decent.
War will only become obsolete when good finally triumphs over evil once and for all on Judgement Day.
Um. What does it mean when the white flag is at half mast? The French are hiring?
LOL! IOW, "Trust in God, but keep rowing to shore."
- Dalai Lama
"The Art of War is a subject of vital importance to the continued sovereignty of the State. It is the path to ruin or safety. Under no circumstance is warfare an object of inquiry which may be safely ignored."
- Sun-Tzu
I have to say....between the two of them, Mr. Lama sounds like an idiot.
The Islamists don't seem to think so, and as long as they don't, I don't either. We have a right to defend ourselves and take police action against threats to the common good.
We need to download the Service Pack that patches the Falluja hole.
After 9/11, I reluctantly argued with my mother regarding the pending invasion of Afghanistan when she said, "War never solves anything!" I countered while war is never a permanent solution to anything, it sure does solve some problems, like, for example, people living in my hometown of San Francisco in 1941 faced the problem of a possible Japanese invasion of the West Coast. Today, we are at peace with Japan, and their ability to wage war on the US is non-existent.
Problem solved.
I wish I had been in the studio when Michael Moore was on Oprah earlier this year, and spouted off about how in US schools they teach the history of war, but not of peacemakers, saying that they should examine guys like Mahatma Gandhi more. I would have pointed out that Gandhi only was successful in his fight to liberate India from the British crown because he was dealing with civilized people. After the UK pulled out, the fight to fill the leadership vacuum between the Hindi majority and (guess who?) radical Islamists began, and there was a bloodbath. And Mr. Peacemaker Gandhi couldn't do a maddog thing about it.
That they've surrendered, but that they feel really, really bad about it.
Dalai Lama needs to go to Baghdad, get beheaded for being an infidel, and then say war is obsolete. Oh, that's right, his FREAKING HEAD would be cut off!
Geopolitics 101.
You are exactly right. This is an important point to make to our children when they are being taught about Gandhi and MLK.
Hmmm....If that view is from the S.F. side, it's too far west - so it would be on landfill.(scream)
It almost looks like its from the Marin county side, looking south. There are a series of old coastal forts from WWI and WWII that are near the Golden Gate. One, Ft. Baker, is under and east of the GG bridge. There would be space for Starfleet there.
How does the Dalai Lama think the Chicoms will leave Tibet - if he asks nicely?
Possible, but I can think of other, more likely things happening. Like PETA serving veal parmesan at their next Hollywood awards dinner.
So Dalai baby, how's that peace thing doing to free Tibet from China?
