House told to alter intelligence bill (Bush Opposes Crack Down on Illegal Immigration)
The Washington Times ^ | October 4, 2004 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 10/04/2004 7:17:15 AM PDT by Goldwater4ever

The White House has told House Republicans that it wants them to remove provisions in their intelligence-overhaul bill that would crack down on illegal aliens' obtaining drivers' licenses, allow easier deportation and limit the use of foreign consular ID cards. The Senate's bill lacks those provisions, and as the two chambers race toward trying to pass a bill before the Nov. 2 election, the measures are a potential stumbling block. The White House wants those provisions out, according to a congressional source familiar with the bill. "They have expressed desire to kill some of the immigration provisions and gut some of others," the source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Rosemary Jenks, a lobbyist for stricter immigration controls for the group NumbersUSA , who has been tracking the bill, said White House policy officials met with Republican staffers to urge them to remove the provisions, even though White House officials initially had signed off on those same provisions before the bill was introduced officially. "The White House was involved in the negotiations before the bill was introduced, and now, for some reason, it has come back and decided to insist that the main provisions, the most effective provisions of the bill, be gutted," she said. She said House Republican leaders appear to be standing firm in refusing the White House demands. A White House spokesman did not return a call for comment yesterday. ***

"This goes to the very heart of the entire conspiracy of 9/11," he said. "These people entered the country, got driver's licenses, used those driver's licenses to obtain the services they needed, and then used those driver's licenses to get on the plane."

Bush is wrong on this one and if the dems seize on this, he's going to lose.

Turner and Reyes --- Congressmen from Texas have seized on this. They're asking for more money to get some kind of border control put into place ---- Reyes is hispanic which I know some Republicans wouldn't believe --- but he has good backing --- very high actually --- from border hispanics who believe there should be some control over who and what comes over that border.

Sheila Jackson Lee is squaking about the border, too. GOP, you best wake up!

Dan, all I'm saying is I will vote for Bush and I don't understand what the hell he's doing.

What I wonder --- if Bush is desperately trying to stall the revolution in Mexico --- if immigration to the USA is slowed up, things are apt to heat up quite fast over there --- there are so many problems, there is a very big reluctance for their elites to make any changes, there are such desperately high levels of poverty and frustration. Recently Mexicans have been holding huge but non-violent protests over their fast skyrocketing violent crime problems.

Vicente Fox's poltical party didn't do well in this summer's elections and the party that some here call a Communist party main some big gains. I think it's possible that Bush is doing anything at all to give Vicente Fox everything he demands in an effort to keep his party in power because he believes that's the only stability and hope they have. Or that we have --- to avoid a big bloody revolution in a neighboring country.

Otherwise --- the only reason I can think is Bush is so pro-big-business that he's just giving them whatever numbers of cheap labor they want to keep them happy --- except many coming from Mexico aren't coming to work -- so it's not all about cheap labor.

If all you've got left to fall back on is "Kerry would be worse", your guy has lost already.

You know what, bub? Kerry really would be worse. That's not rhetoric or talking points. That's the truth.

You could be right. That makes more sense than the old usual, "illegals are good for the USA" BS.

I just wish that he would tell Vicente that raping American taxpayers wasn't part of the deal...

At this point I'm not half as worried about Bush losing as I am about what will come of his not responding to this invasion.

Another large-scale terrorist attack (possibly dwarfing 9/11) is a best-case scenario. Civil War II seems incresingly likely.

I understand what your saying and in some cases this may very well be true. At the same time I think what you are seeing in this post is fear. The fear that a bad choice in a close election could cost us this one. Personally, someone would have to rip my arm out at the socket and use it to cast a vote for Kerry, because I certainly never would. That said in 1992 I had a neighbor and good friend who was a solid Bush supporter till almost the end. The tax raise and the quota bill turned him away and he voted for Perot. Of course he later in the year realized the mistake he made. I too was very angry about the quota bill but voted for Bush out of no other choice.

So I do understand the frustration.

I'll wager there are a lot of folks here who would be willing to take a stand over this type of ANTI-American activity.

Ask yourself, what am I prepared to do?

What's a true conservative to do?

From what I hear, the fish will be biting pretty good that day. Though it's been awhile since I've gone. Y'all are invited down to Jordan Lake here in central NC to get some fishing in.

az, now remember this year's election for Senator is more important than the last election for Senator. And we all know how much our latest Republican Senator has done to us for us. Maybe we can get an even more restrictive seat belt law out of it or something. What's that? Speed limits down to 25? :)

No need to leave the section for President blank. If you're a true conservative and have had enough of this sort of thing to make you vote your conscience, a vote for Peroutka speaks much louder than leaving the section for President blank.

You know, that's a good question.

American participation in the International Court won't really affect the lives of everyday Americans much (not that I think it's a good idea - it isn't). Massive illegal immigration, on the other hand, degrades many aspects of the lives of Americans on a daily basis.

The real answer, though, is to vote your conscience without regards to electability - just as the founding fathers took up arms without first having Vegas calculate the odds that they could defeat the British Army.

>"I hope you'll like President Kerry."

Let's see...a liberal whose policies will be fought tooth and nail by an opposition Congress...versus a liberal whose policies will be rubber stamped by a Congress from the same party. Interesting choice, that.

The quote "I hope you'll like President Kerry." came from AM2000.

My comment was "When it comes to immigration, Bush is
