CLEVELAND -- With cold efficiency, Vice President Dick Cheney sought to eviscerate the credibility of the Democratic presidential ticket Tuesday night -- delivering a tough and terse message without the smirks and verbal miscues that cluttered President Bush's debate performance five days ago.
On the receiving end of a well-practiced assault from a veteran politician, Sen. John Edwards held his own in the running mate debate.
"You are still not being straight with the American people," the freshman senator from North Carolina said, zinging Cheney on Iraq, his business ties and insinuations that Saddam Hussein is somehow connected to the Sept. 11 terrorist strikes.
The verbal jousting between two men, awash in details, left pundits and voters impressed, if no more sure about which ticket would win.

Beat his butt like he owed him money
Smack!
That's gotta hurt!
more like a 'ho who came up short on Saturday night
i'm surprised that cheney didn't break out laughing when brecky announced that kerry had voted for over 600 tax cuts
On MSNBC the pundits are declaring a Cheney victory in the most decisive terms that I have ever heard. Foxs pundits actually said Edwards won the second half of the debate. At The Corner, many of the bloggers are calling it a draw. I am with MSNBC, Big Time. I have never seen a poorer performance in a debate than I saw from Edwards tonight at least not that I can recall. Maybe someone can remind me of one.
A couple of the quotes that Tom Brokaw, Tim Russert and Chris Matthews are repeating (in awe, actually) are the one about not being able to stand up to al Queda if they cant stand up to Howard Dean, and the one about meeting Edwards for the first time on that stage tonight. Matthews said Cheney had his ammunition and went hunting for squirrel, and he found a squirrel. Russert said Cheney could take Trumps place on the Apprentice because tonight he told Edwards, youre fired.
Now the pundits on MSNBC are talking about how Cheney made a clear and decisive case that Edwards is not ready to be a heartbeat away. First Gwen Ifill did a pretty decent job as moderator and now the pundits on MSNBC, of all places, are calling it correctly. Cheney definitely hit a home run.
One thing Matthews has been harping on for months and just cant seem to understand came up in his analysis tonight. Brian Williams played the clip of Cheney saying he never said there was a connection between Iraq and 9/11, then showed a clip from MTP where Cheney said the action against Iraq was an integral part of the war against terrorists and especially those who attacked us on 9/11. They claimed it was Cheney saying Iraq was connected to 9/11. It was not. Let me explain this to Matthews one more time. Iraq was not about retribution for 9/11/2001. It was about preventing a 9/11/2005 or 2006 or 2007. Is that really so hard to understand?

Cheney did us proud tonight.
Unlike Bush's debate Cheney was on his game and made Edwards look like a high school freshman.
He was especially blunt when he said that he had just met Edwards tonight because Edwards had missed most of his Senate roll calls.
The CO is always nicer than the XO. It's built into their job descriptions.
LOL!
I'm surprised Fournier didn't insist that the AP headline be "Cheney Beats Bush In Debate".
And editors think anyone takes AP seriously...
I love that quote! I'm surprised the networks would focus on that quote -- it's pretty devastating to Kerry and Edwards.
Cheney took his gravitas and clubbed the breck boy like a baby seal. A thing of beauty
He's a hell of a guy, especially for a politician.
-Dick Cheney has a problem with regards to his position on homosexuality. But he is always at least outwardly gracious when he discusses the issue.
-Cheney is very smart. I didn't think he did that well, and was amazed that he got declared winner in the snap polls and in the MSM. I thought Cheney was much better against Lieberman. But Cheney is smart, and knows when to reply to attacks, and when it is a waste of time to reply--instead of just naturally replying to every attack. I would really trust him as Commander in Chief.
**Yawn**
Typical biased AP reporting shown in the use of adjectives. Cheney is described as "cold and efficient", while "younger and flashier" goes to Edwards. Also, the predictable numbnut, middle-of-the-roader chimes in with his dopey uhhh-why-can't-these-guys-be-prez comment by saying they did better than the headliners.
Me too -- big time.
Ugh! Just heard frazzled Colmes, say, "well, Cheney did better than "YOUR" President did last Thursday, er, our President. Whadda jerk!
