Cheney met Edwards at a prayer breakfast?

Posted on 10/06/2004 6:27:56 AM PDT by Mr. Goodcrank

I think Cheney made the case that Edwards and Kerry simply have better things to do than "report for duty". Their voting records reflect this. Cheney skewered Edwards when he said that the debate was the first time that he had met Edwards. Cheney evidently forgot about that one time at the prayer breakfast. Aside from the fact that Dick Cheney has made literally thousands of more memorable acquaintances since that ONE time. Aside from the fact that Edwards may not have made a lasting favorable impression. Aside from the fact that Cheney may have meant "met" in a more substantial way than a prayer breakfast. How does ONE social gathering compensate for, or mitigate, the fact that Edwards and Kerry are chronic no-shows? This proves that Cheney is a liar? There must not be many straws left to grasp!

And Senator, frankly, you have a record in the Senate that's not very distinguished. You've missed 33 out of 36 meetings of the Judiciary Committee, almost 70 percent of the meetings of the Intelligence Committee. You've missed a lot of key votes on tax policy, on energy, on Medicare reform. You're hometown newspaper has taken to calling you "Senator Gone." You've got one of the worst attendance records in the United States Senate.

Now, in my capacity as Vice President, I am the President of the Senate, the presiding officer. I'm up in the Senate most Tuesdays when they're in session. The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight.

Being at a rubber chicken event is not the same as being in the Senate on a Daily basis, or even on any given Tuesday. That is where the SERIOUS business is handled. The Potus and Vpotus attend so many events, that one face in the crowd would not be that memorable. Now the Senate is a different story.

But, again the ignorant media takes the dummy way out.

Thanks but it's not necessary. Some folks leap to conclusions. Do it myself all the time.

Whether or not they may have been at the same prayer breakfast is somewhat irrelevant to the point being made - that being that Edwards was pratically AWOL throughout his entire senate career.

All Cheney has to say now is - "Fine, apparently we were at the same prayer breakfast 3 years ago. Just so you know, we don't discuss national security at prayer breakfasts, John. Be that as it may, the debate is now only the SECOND time I have ever met you."

Either way you look at it, Edwards was absent an awful LOT and it looks horrible for him. By the Dems keeping this thing alive, it will just help Cheney hammer that point home.

This will get no traction - the more the Dims (like you son) try to nitpick this, the more obvious it will be that Cheney was in attendance during Senate business multiples of times more than Edwards and Kerry, while it is a Senator's main job to be there...

Cheney was trying to make the point that Edwards was an absentee senator. "The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight."

Now who really thinks that a new, do nothing senator would make an impression on vp Cheney. He's been involved in to many SERIOUS issues to pay any attention to Opie.

Edwards didn't stay at the prayer breakfast long enough for Cheney to meet him.

As soon as Edwards realized it was a prayer breakfast and not an ACLU meeting, he melted faster than the witch in the Wizard of Oz.

He slithered in and slithered out below eyeball level.

I think everyone is misreading Goodcrank's post. He is saying IF Cheney met Edwards, either Edwards didn't make any impression (highly likely), or that Cheney has forgotten about meeting a back-bench freshman Democrat Senator.

Please take the time to read posts in their entirety.

Here's a perfect example of Cheney lying

This is a grainy photo of Bush at the 2001 NY World Series. If you look carefully, my 2nd cousin is standing in white in row 6 seat 9 to the right of Bush. Yet Bush will deny, to this day that he ever met him even though they were in the same stadium! Damn Republican liars!

I think it is ridiculous for you to say "everyone" is doing anything, especially falsely accusing some of us of misreading something.

Before you start scolding others consider how you phrase it and don't lump everyone together.

Drudge has a link to an article that says that met three times:

On Feb. 1, 2001, the vice president thanked Edwards by name at a Senate prayer breakfast and sat beside him during the event.

On April 8, 2001, Cheney and Edwards shook hands when they met off-camera during a taping of NBC's "Meet the Press," moderator Tim Russert said Wednesday on "Today."

On Jan. 8, 2003, the two met when the first-term North Carolina senator accompanied Elizabeth Dole to her swearing-in by Cheney as a North Carolina senator, Edwards aides also said.

Perhaps Edwards was just incredibly non-memorable. Anyway, Cheney made a great point about Edwards' record in the Senate. Is he really someone who is qualified to be president? Can he be counted on to show up for work?

Relax and quit being so literal. You sound like one of the media members using this prayer breakfast encounter as proof of Cheney being discredited.

Even if Cheney did meet Edwards at a prayer breakfast or at Elizabeth Dole's swearing in, that still isn't on the job. Maybe when he met him at these social functions he didn't know that he is a senator. He could have been a senator wannabe. I think Cheney made his point.
