Australian Election
vanity | 9th October 2004 | naturalman1975

Posted on 10/09/2004 12:47:55 AM PDT by naturalman1975

I hesitate to suggest this, as I am fairly new around here, but I have noticed that there is quite a lot of interest in the Australian eleciton, so I thought I would make an offer here. I will be watching the election coverage and if people are interested, as the coverage proceeds, I can post updates in this thread, so people can follow what is happening in Australia.

Just an offer. Coverage starts in 15 minutes.

Oh and if any other Aussies want to post updates as well, of course, I wouldn't object. It's just I can see interest.

Still waiting for the Prime Minister. I want to go to bed.

Me too, mate! But first I think I'll raise a glass or two to Howard and thank God that sanity is still with Australia.

I vividly recall Bali and what the Islamofascists are plotting in your part of the planet..I certainly would think security would be on an Australian's mind at the voting booth.

The left-wingers all across the world have got to be in tears right now! I'll bet they all thought Iraq would get Howard kicked out of office, and they thought wrong.

Hopefully this is a good omen for us!

Thanks, I saw remarks from Richard Prebble (the former ACT Party leader) and he described that Latham once led because people were looking at other issues like health, education. Even he predicted Latham would win because Howard was in his 3rd term - which, thankfully, he never did.

Your country has once again shown that you guys are not like the brotherly Dominion on the North American continent. Mark Latham would be considered "pro-US" with his stances had he been in Canada (indeed, Paul Martin just does so), but this way doesn't work in Australia.

Actually, when you think of it, it's a defeat for Old Europe. When President Bush wins, it'll send a one-two punch smack into the pusses of Chirac and Schroeder.

Extracts (not guaranteed 100% accurate, typing as heard))

"My fellow Australians,

May I first say that I am extremely humbled by the confidence shown in the leadership of this great nation by the Coalition."

"I rededicate myself and all of my colleagues to the service of the Australian people

"This nation by circumstance of history... this nation stands on the threshold of a new area of great achievement.

"This is a proud nation, a confident nation, a cohesive nation, a united nation, a nation that can achieve anything it wants if it sets it mind to it."

"A beacon of hope, of tolerance, and achievement around the world.

"The rest of the world sees us as a strong and successful nation."

"We are a nation that is respected around the world because we are prepared to stand up for what we believe in."

"Never forget the fact that governments are elected not only to govern for the people who voted for them, but also for the people who voted against them."

"We have to look back to the 1960s to find a case where an incumbent goverment has increased its majority on two consecutive occasions."

"Can I say to John Anderson, the Deputy Prime Minister and the leader of the National Party, there is no finer human being in public service."

"To the Deputy Leader of my own party, Peter Costello, the treasurer, whose stewardship has given us one of the strongest economies in the western world and the best economic position since World War II."

"We are here tonight, we have won our fourth successive victory, and we've won it for many reasons... we have worked together, we have been a team, we have not been a one man band."

Wow! Love his speech! Thanks for posting this. Mr Howard has a grin from ear to ear.
It's been a great day hasn't it? GWB trounces Kerry in the debate, Howard wins and Afghanistan gets to vote.
(Howard just mentioned Afghan women voting.)

4 more years Bush Cheney. Nighty-nite.

This victory will make Howard the second longest serving Prime Minister in Australia's history (actually the hit that mark on 22 Dec 04). It is VERY rare for a PM to get a 4th term, let alone INCREASE his majority.

Tonight is Howard's night.

"We are privileged to be able to participate in the great democracy. Let us remember today that the people of Afghanistan have had an election. And that election was made possible because of several nations that took a stand for democracy and against terrorism... We should be proud of the role we have played in their liberation. Just as we should be proud of the fact we have stood up for our values in other areas."

"The things that unite Australia should be much more important than the things that divide us."

"To be the Prime Minister of Australia is undoubtedly the greatest privilege that can come the way of any person."

"I serve the Australian people and I commit myself to their service in the years ahead."
