California: Lopsided Senate race: Boxer in front in fund raising and the polls
Sacramento Bee ^ | October 17, 2004 | Alexa H. Bluth

U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer was ready to put up a fight. She amassed millions of dollars for her bid for a third term and prepared to defend a voting record that is ranked among the U.S. Senate's most liberal by turning her attention heavily to homeland security issues.

But the battle never came.

As veteran Democratic consultant Joe Cerrell puts it, she is "just running under the right alignment of the stars."

Boxer's opponent, former California Secretary of State Bill Jones, has failed to mount a serious challenge and national Republicans have all but abandoned California as a battleground.

The CA GOP doesn't just shoot itself in the foot, it shoots itself in the head. I listen to talk radio all day and have yet to hear Jones appear on a single show, even those hosted in CA. I've heard or seen maybe 3 ads. What a surprise that nobody is going to vote for the Invisible Man.

Jones is indistinguishable from a 'rat. Independent voters quite rationally say, "Why not keep the 'rat with some seniority?" Jones doesn't stand for anything conservative. Just got my American Rifleman: Jones gets a NRA grade of "D" compared to Boxer's "F." The NRA refused to endorse him, and I will probably abstain in a vain attempt to protest to the CA Republican party their selection of this completely worthless candidate. If the disparity between votes cast for Bush and Jones is great enough, maybe those idiots directing Republican Party politics from the California and Pacific Union Clubs will get a clue.

Duh. When will somebody with some sense get a grip on the CA GOP? Who didn't know this was going to happen?

California's GOP is painstakingly realistic. It has become the bastion of the tofu-sprout eating, green enviro, isolated, liberal voters. I understand that reform can't come without effort, but Bush has barely broken within 20 points of Kerry there despite a widely popular Republican Governator.

If it wasn't for agriculture and silicone valley, conservatives would gladly let California declare its independence. Let Rob Reiner and Sean Penn have their Communist state and let it drift into the Pacific when the Tectonic plates shift.

I was born and raised and live in CA, and IMO he fruits and nuts seem generally to come from somewhere else.

And never forget FR was founded by a Californian.

I wonder if Box of Rocks is a native Californian; have to check that out.

Here you go. Box of Rocks is from New York. And look at the tidbit at the end of the bio! She's even more disgusting than I ever imagined.

Barbara Boxer (born November 11, 1940) is a liberal member of the Democratic Party who has been a United States Senator representing California since 1993. Throughout her political career Boxer has been a vocal advocate for environmental issues, women's rights and gun control. For these reasons and her liberal stance, she is often a political target of conservative groups. She is Jewish.

Born Barbara Levy in Brooklyn, New York, she graduated from Brooklyn College in 1962 with a degree in economics and then worked as a journalist and a stockbroker.

Before joining the Senate she served six years on the Marin County, California Board of Supervisors, which included a term as the first woman president of the board. She then was elected to the United States House of Representatives and served there for 10 years.

Boxer and her husband Stewart Boxer have two children, one of whom married Hugh Rodham, brother of United States Senator Hillary Clinton, who represents the state of New York.

Barbara Boxer was born in Brooklyn, NY - now you understand where her politics come from ...

She earned her college degree in Economics - sure doesn't show, does it?

Oh, the degree was from Brooklyn College - now it all makes sense again ...

I agree that he is a lame candidate, but why didn't he even try? There is more to this story.

So one might ask why this bastardo Jones ran instead of letting the ex Treasurer of the United States run?

God forbid some politicians do what is best for their people verses their resumes.

Jones, time to retire from politics, you suck with the lack of campaign you offered.

Arnold's a RINO... but we'll take what we can get out there. Hopefully he can use his popularity to get more Republicans, even moderate ones, elected in Congressional districts to warm up those hippie liberals to voting Republican as they get older and move out of their parents houses.

Boxer has a horrid record and was ripe for the picking has the Republican party sought to really try and unseat her.

I think it is time the leadership of the California Republican leadership retire, give it to some younger hungry principled people.

The California GOP is still run by an old-boy network that views it largely as a hobby and likes to snuggle up to the Pete Wilson era crowd any chance it gets. Until they start doing what it takes to win and begin to actively push candidates that can get the attention of the broader electorate, they will continue to fade into oblivion.

Rosario Marin could have given Boxer a run for her money, but the old boy network endorsed Jones, with no expectation of him winning. But they all got to go to the receptions and hang out with the usual crowd and have some chicken wings.

Totally. Why oh why didn't everyone vote for Rosario? The party didn't get behind her and they let Jones sell her down the river.

John & Ken on KFI have it worked out. Kalifornia is already been decided. It's entire political makeup has been pre-ordained by Gentlemen's Agreements between the Dems and the Republicans. Even the decision to challenge what few seats there are up for grabs is decided by preset agreements.

No new money is coming in to anyone from the RNC. What the California RNC does with its $ is anyone's guess.

Arnold was a fluke and wasn't funded by the RNC either.

It's over in Kalifornia -- might as well give up (I am -- good luck replacing my 6 portable figure income and very high tax $$$).

I was so annoyed with my fellow Cali Republicans for not supporting Marin in the primaries. My gut feeling is that Marin would have cleaned Boxer's clock. Further, Marin would have continued the California latino movement to the right started by the Arnold recall success.

I could even imagine that CA would be in play for Bush with a well-funded Marin trashing that imbecilic Boxer...

Oh well, maybe some day the CA Republicans will understand that you must play to middle to pull to the right (as Bush is proving on a daily basis).

Bush is within 8 points of Kerry here. I been working a lot with CA GOP but if I could I would go work for Nevada GOP,it would be a better use of time.
