I say forget introspection. It's time to be honest about our antagonists. My predecessors in this conversation are thoughtful men, and I honor their ideas, but let's try something else. I grew up in Missouri and most of my family voted for Bush, so I am going to be the one to say it: The election results reflect the decision of the right wing to cultivate and exploit ignorance in the citizenry. I suppose the good news is that 55 million Americans have evaded the ignorance-inducing machine. But 58 million have not. (Well, almost 58 millionmy relatives are not ignorant, they are just greedy and full of classic Republican feelings of superiority.)
Ignorance and bloodlust have a long tradition in the United States, especially in the red states. There used to be a kind of hand-to-hand fight on the frontier called a "knock-down-drag-out," where any kind of gouging, biting, or maiming was considered fair. The ancestors of today's red-state voters used to stand around cheering and betting on these fights. When the forces of red and blue encountered one another head-on for the first time in Kansas Territory in 1856, the red forces from Missouri, who had been coveting Indian land across the Missouri River since 1820, entered Kansas and stole the territorial election.

What an arrogant jerk! It is possible to have a college, graduate and professional degree and still vote Republican. I loathe these liberals!!!!
Do you know who Jane Smiley is? If you wanna know why American fiction sucks, look at her awful college lit course-type crap.
Just another malcontent heading to Canada.
More of the same bile we're used to seeing from Jane, the Ignorant Slut.
Yep, but let's hope they take her advice to heart and drive a stake through their own rotten heart.
"Jane,...you slut" ....where's Dan Ackroyd when you need him ?
Moore what?
Spin it anyway you want to, Jane Babe.
We still won and you ain't in power!
Looks like HATE musta sobered up today
The irony is that those are the very people DemocRATS vow they are fighting to represent.
Lol, we all knew 2004 was the election in which the liberal medias mask finally slipped. We just didn't expect how far.
Look up the word "hate" in the dictionary, and you'll find Jane Smiley's picture next to it.
Freepers really have quite a busy agenda over the next four years ~LOL~
Let's see, Democrats are not ignorant, because they believe:
1) Humans cause global warming - No scientific proof required.
2) Abortion is a fine option, in spite of scientific proof that life begins at conception.
3) Taxing corporations reduces the financial burden on consumers, in spite of the obvious fact the taxes are passed through to consumers.
4) A 2% return on our Social Security investment is the best we should expect, and any alternative would bankrupt the system.
5) Embryonic stem cell research will result in cures for all human ills, in spite of all of the contrary scientific evidence and the complete lack of interest by the private investment sector.
6) Legalizing marijuana will improve learning, motivation, and productivity and make the world a better place.
7) If the U.S. leaves the world's tyrants alone, we will be safer.
(please add to this list and I'll send the results to the author of the subject article.)
Unteachable? This from a publication that admits its entire writing staff is liberal. Have they ever even listened to the other side? Do they even know anyone who doesn't agree with them?
Jane Smiley's books suck and so does she.
And they wonder why they lost??
