The unteachable ignorance of the red states.
Slate ^ | November 4, 2004 | Jane Smiley

Posted on 11/04/2004 8:09:34 PM PST by The Loan Arranger

I say forget introspection. It's time to be honest about our antagonists. My predecessors in this conversation are thoughtful men, and I honor their ideas, but let's try something else. I grew up in Missouri and most of my family voted for Bush, so I am going to be the one to say it: The election results reflect the decision of the right wing to cultivate and exploit ignorance in the citizenry. I suppose the good news is that 55 million Americans have evaded the ignorance-inducing machine. But 58 million have not. (Well, almost 58 million—my relatives are not ignorant, they are just greedy and full of classic Republican feelings of superiority.)

Ignorance and bloodlust have a long tradition in the United States, especially in the red states. There used to be a kind of hand-to-hand fight on the frontier called a "knock-down-drag-out," where any kind of gouging, biting, or maiming was considered fair. The ancestors of today's red-state voters used to stand around cheering and betting on these fights. When the forces of red and blue encountered one another head-on for the first time in Kansas Territory in 1856, the red forces from Missouri, who had been coveting Indian land across the Missouri River since 1820, entered Kansas and stole the territorial election.

For a bunch of intelligent people, they sure did run a pathetically stupid campaign with an awful candidate.

Yeah, I guess my two master's degrees and 1380 SAT don't count (oh, and the fact that I graduated high school at the top of my class and went to college *for free*). I'm just an ignorant trailer-trash hick because I voted GWB.

They got slapped down hard, and they're throwing these insults to make themselves feel better. It's their security blanket.

Wow, there are some serious "Daddy issues" going on there.

Alas, I know all too well who Jane Smiley is. She's a TERRIBLE writer, sort of a piss-poor man's Barbara Kingsolver. How she won the Pulitzer is a mystery for the ages.

I thought hate wasn't a family value? Oh, yeah--they don't believe in family, either.

I gotta say that after this election all this venom from the left is music to my ears. Today I've learned that I'm stupid, ignorant, racist, bigoted, out-of-touch, un-educated, misinformed, zombied...you get the picture. And I love hearing all of it because it's the sound of the left digging their hole deeper and deeper. Every time a leftist calls a conservative a name it's one more shovelful of dirt tossed out of their ever-deepening hole.

This is but one of many variations on that theme that I've read today. Easy enough to believe if you want to and they do.

"look at her awful college lit course-type crap..."

As a long-time writer and teacher of lit, that's about the most succinct description of her drivel I've heard...but, of course, the NYT loves her to death, because, you see, in every one of her novels she disses her Midwestern roots.

Appears shes doing the same in this screed.

Not to me. The Pulitzers are by and large unreadab;e blocks of wasted paper.

If you ever get a cahcne check out a little book called "The Reader's Manifesto". This guy demolishes Smiley and a handful of other "literary establishment" writers.

Jane Smiley's picture? Shouldn't have asked:

I guess she was looking in the mirror when she decided to title one of her novels "Moo".

And thus the Platonic ideal of the educated elite is proliferated. The liberals need to realize the reason we vote different from them is because we have a job, pay taxes, have children, and try to live peacefully.

"First, they put the fear of God into you—if you don't believe in the literal word of the Bible, you will burn in hell."

God is merciful. The Democrats aren't.

Listening to open minded, diversity loving liberals
disparage Red America and Christians is just
laughable. If this election show one thing it's that
the people in the liberal echo chambers of the the
North East and West Coast are completely out of touch
with the majority of America. The Democrats and the
liberals in the media are just reinforcing their self
delusions.

Keep it up Jane and you'll guarantee Republican
control of this country for generations to come
because you and your friends just don't get it.

But we blue state p....ies know how it should be.

That's why we DIDN'T volunteer to join the armed forces.

We prove our courage daily by arguing with those with whom we disagree!
