European Leaders Lavish President Bush With Faint Praise
George Bush's closest allies in Europe greeted his re-elections as a boost to the war on Islamic extremism but most European leaders barely managed to conceal the sense of disappointment they shared with most of the public across the continent.
A few strong Bush supporters such as Italian Prime Minster Berlusconi and Russian President Vlaimir Putin expressed genuine pleasure at his victory, but leaders of other nations including Germany, France and Spain, matched their own explanations with calls for a less unilateral approach from Washington.
Swedish Prime Minster said Europe would 'continue to criticize Bush the same way as earlier, but I do not believe that he will be more willing to listen.'
French President Jacque Chirac said the challenges facing the world could not be tackled 'without a close Trans-Atlantic partnership' a theme that German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder echoed.

Funny because of all the parties in Europe 21% is the definition of a mandate
I think - I'm not sure - but he may be talking about some of us. You think so?
But if he is, then the Aussie Mr. Wilson will have to take his lovely article and stick it Down Under.:)
Aussies are usually smarter than this article indicates..and this was a so called 'news' article!
Isn't Blair up for re-election soon?
Let's see if Freeper Byron the Aussie is around, and I'll ping my favorite Kiwi also.
"How can 59,017,382 people be so DUMB?" said the headline, beneath a photo of Mr Bush.
"I think - I'm not sure - but he may be talking about some of us. You think so?"
He forgot to mention the PJs. Some people are soooo out of touch.
Probably the only liberal Aussie paper down there..
What some gin soaked Aussie hack who hasn't anything to report and is desperate for fame and fortune as he clings to popular opinion in media corridors doesn't matter a crap really xJ. He won't do much in his lifetime apart from being a media parrot.
Leaders who are actually involved in shaping history, like the Japanese, Italian and Australian ones, timed their words of support significantly before the election. That was, in my opinion, under-reported. Left wing media heroes are given far too much attention on this site. They have to be relegated to their seats in the funeral parlours as the meduims they work for are buried. If this is what they're calling "news", sorry, my buck and a half stays in my pocket to assist with expenses for the wake.
Roger that ~ shaggy ~ well said!
Shaggy, don't feel bad, we have our idiots over here too. They just can't figure out how they lost, where the voters went wrong.
Interesting that the article was from the media of a country that just re-elected their PM who backed the U.S. and President Bush.
