Anti Specter Update

Posted on 11/05/2004 5:51:20 PM PST by franky

From the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

CONTINUED ACTION NEEDED ON SPECTER

Inspite of Senator Specter's back-tracking of his inflammatory statement regarding President Bush's judicial nominees, momentum is growing to have him removed as chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Specter's statement that it would be "unlikely" for judicial nominees who oppose a "woman's right to choose" to be confirmed set off a firestorm.

Specter's arrogant affront to the president the day after the election was unconscionable. "The president is well aware of what happened, when a bunch of his nominees were sent up, with the filibuster," Specter said.

President Bush has made it clear that he will nominate justices to the Supreme Court who will strictly interpret the Constitution according to its text and history and not legislate from the bench. Specter disagrees with this criteria.

ACTION

Continue to contact Senate Majority leader Senator Bill Frist at 202-224-3344 or 202-224-3135 and ask him to urge Republican Judiciary Committee members not to allow Senator Specter to be chairman of the Judiciary Committee. His Fax number is 202-228-1264.

Also contact Republican Judiciary Committee members at numbers listed below or through the U. S. Capitol Switchboard, 202-224-3121.

Thanks.

We must contact the conservative media in addition to contacting the politicians. They both feed off of the other.

Keep up the pressure...we will hit critical mass if we keep pushing.

Haven't finished the list yet--but answering machines are picking up for messages on all but Cornyn's (I've gone through DeWine). Great time to do it--no waiting.

We have a lot of people to drive out of the party so we can get our minority status back.

Darn that Karl Rove.

Larry Craig would be PERFECT!!! Pro-Life and extremely pro 2nd Amendment!!! Maybe then we could ram through a federal CCW reciprocity law. How I would love to walk the streets of Boston to visit my sister and be carrying my Sig P245 concealed in a Blade Tech IWB holster. Or visit the new WWII Memorial similarly packing.

Bump for the FAX numbers that I'll use over the weekend. FAX's are much more effective than e-mails.

Thanks for the numbers. I haven't been able to contact Frist's office for two days (tried three times). That's good news, because it means others are getting through!

I called Senator Don Nickles and Senator Jim Inhofe at their DC offices today.

I tried calling Senator Frist 6 times throughout the morning and afternoon. Busy signal every time!

Finally, I resulted to sending Sen. Frist an e-mail.

You guys need to walk a little more softly. I agree that we have to do something about Specter, but dragging this out into the open via the media is NOT something that should be done.

From hoystory.blogspot.com:
Reduce the GOP Senate majority: Barring any unexpected, last-minute developments, the GOP will have a 55-44-1 majority in Congress' upper chamber. After President Bush and Vice President Cheney helped Pennsylvania's senior Senator Arlen Specter fend off a strong primary challenge from conservative Pat Toomey, Specter has decided to bite the hand that feeds him.

Specter, as presumptive chairman of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, suggested that he would block any Bush nominee to the Supreme Court who opposed abortion rights. Reiterating his position that a woman's right to choose is "inviolate," he said overturning Roe v. Wade today would be akin to trying to reverse Brown v. Board of Education, the court's 1954 landmark desegregation decision.

Barring unforeseen GOP objections, Specter, 74, should assume the committee chairmanship in January. He also sent an unsubtle message to the White House that he expects nominees for the federal bench to be of the highest caliber, and took a critical swipe at the stature of the current court. [emphasis added]

Well, I think that the GOP should object. Specter can switch parties if he pleases -- we don't need him. Republicans can't accept a Pat Leahy-type obstructionist on the judiciary committee.

GOP chairman Bill Frist can be contacted at (202) 224-3344 or senator_frist@frist.senate.gov. Let him know how you feel about Sen. Specter.

Frist fax:
202 228-1264 (DC FAX)
615 352-9985 (NASHVILLE)
202-224-3344 (DC OFFICE)

We can't let Spector get away with this. Please call and/or write Senator Frist. If we should contact someone else as well, please post that information.

Please ping any appropriate lists, thank you!

My letter to Sen. Frist, please copy and borrow from if it helps:

Dear Senator Frist,

I am elated about the recent general election results. I worked very hard--going door-to-door and passing out literature for several days--to get George W. Bush re-elected. I am also extremely pleased that Americans choose to give Senate Republicans a majority.

However, I am very concerned about the possibility that Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania may become head of the Senate Judiciary committee. My concern lies in the fact that he has stated his opposition to any pro-life nominees. To me, this amounts to the same type of obstruction tactics that Americans rejected when they voted to unseat Tom Daschle.

We have already had 4 years of out of control filibustering by democrats who wish to impede the judicial process and the president's right to appoint judicial nominees. I appeal to you as a voting and concerned citizen to not allow a Republican to become an obstacle to the President's mandate from the people.

Please Senator Frist, use your authority as Senate Majority Leader to stop Arlen Specter from being a road block to the President! Please keep him off the Senate Judiciary Committee!

Also, use your Senate majority to stop the filibuster! The American people despise these tactics, and are counting on you to fight for them now that their choices have been made.

Sincerely,

Please give me a break. What's the point of winning if we let leftists and RINO's set the agenda? Specter needs to be brought to heel. There are several options -- remove him as chairman, stack the committee with extra Republicans, or let Specter know that he is on an extremely tight leash. One stupid move..and he's gone. This is why I backed Pat Toomey.
