Groups push for diversity among teachers

WASHINGTON (AP) — A glaring lack of racial and cultural diversity among teachers is hurting the chances of success for minority students, a coalition of school groups contended Tuesday.

A small but growing body of research shows minorities tend to do better in class and face higher expectations when taught by teachers from their racial or ethnic group, said the National Collaborative on Diversity in the Teaching Force, a partnership led by six groups.

"Teachers of color" often serve as role models and cultural brokers who help students connect to their school through shared identities, group leaders said.

In both the recruitment of teachers and the training of veteran ones, the coalition is calling on policy-makers to put a priority on diversity and "cultural competence," meaning the ability of teachers to understand their students' culture and incorporate it in class.

To put such importance on what race a teacher is or isn't is an act of racism.

If the teachers would worry more about TEACHING than this BS we would have some well educated students.

If I even suggested that only white teachers should be allowed to teach white students I would, justifiably, be crucified. How is this any different.

Welcome to the post-modern Jim Crow world. If schools are first, can restaurants, grocery stores and swimming pools be far behind?

Anyone know who the six groups are that are referred to here as the "National Collaborative on Diversity in the Teaching Force"?

Instead of worrying about quotas of "teachers of color" how about trying "teachers of competence" and see what happens?

Well, it's not like "people of color" (??) are being kept out of the Education Certification programs of America. By and large, they aren't interested in doing this thankless job. Not that I blame them.

Funny you should mention that. I thought of it yesterday when the story of the heart medication that works for blacks but not for whites came out.

What's next? Are men and women really different after all?

thanks for the link. From the "defining a community teacher" section:

"Cultural Change Agent
A Community Teacher is a cultural change agent bringing reform to the political, economic, and social practices and structures inside and outside the classroom through a personal and professional commitment to social justice and global responsibility.

I'm confused, aren't they then saying that ideally students should be taught by teachers of the same race as themselves. Therefore schools should be segregated by race with each race of students being taught by a teacher of the same race? Isn't this what was fought against in the 60s? It seems like yet again, liberal thought leads to a contradiction.

"research shows minorities tend to do better in class and face higher expectations when taught by teachers from their racial or ethnic group"

This is why Washington DC has the finest public schools in the nation.
