Oh, deer! Buck's death raises flap
San Antonio Express-News, Nov 12, 2004 | Nov 12, 2004 | Ron Henry Strait

Buck's death raises flap.Texas game wardens probe knifing of animal with gargantuan antlers at Camp Bullis, Texas. Opening weekend deer hunting in south Texas resulted with a white-tailed deer, no one in Texas has seen in nearly 80 years. "Bullis Buck" carried antlers with 35 scorable points and an outside spread of more than 27 inches and ranks as the third largest taken from a native whitetail in Texas. The problem is the means in which this buck was taken and possible prosecution of the people involved. The question is who winds up with the record-setting rack, which could have a value to collectors in excess of $20,000.

The article says that pictures of the buck have been circulating - but I haven't seen one - and I usually get every wildlife related photo that circulates.

That's what I want to know.

That's why hunters carry knives, afterall.

State game wardens are investigating the death at Camp Bullis last weekend of a white-tailed deer, the likes of which no one in Texas has seen in nearly 80 years.

That is what the article actually said.

John Kerry once had to wrestle a Grizzly Bear to the ground after it knocked away his double barrel shotgun.

You forgot that it knocked away his shotgun before it didn't knock it away.

Nice pics/knives. Maybe you can answer a question. Since Bowie apparently actually designed his knife for fighting. I have read somewhere that his knife had a brass strip on top to catch an opponents blade but I have never seen a bowie knife old or new with that feature. Is the story true or not.

And I recall seeing a knife (or it's picture) with that kind of brass strip over the near half of so of the dull edge, but don't recall that said about Bowie's knife!

Boar spears have been making a come back for several years now and are more popular all the time.

Using a knife alone must take real nerve.

Where is Camp Bullis? I just looked on the Texas map and its not listed. A really dangerous way to hunt deer, unless he was tangled up in a fence or injured.

Dang! I read this part and was very disappointed by the picture that accompanied the article.

Camp Bullis is a huge facility on the northwest boundary of San Antonio.

Useless trivia fact - portions of the first Academy Award winning movie - WINGS - were filmed at Camp Bullis staring then unknown actor Gary Cooper.

A .270 ought to do the job easy enough. :)

Boar spears are being used often enough now that I've even been seeing factory made spears at some of the gun shops I visit.

Catch 'em live and sell 'em is the way to go,for me.

.

I know a young feller that crawled up a gully the other day to get close enough to a bunch to put down a big one with a .22LR.

Couple days later, one of my boys was with an older friend that came up on a big bunch in the road and they used the Ford equipped with what I call a "donkey knocker" bumper to bring home the bacon.

Lots of different ways to skin a cat. :)

I only use a knife to hunt wild boar.

I carry a knife when boar hunting, but I generally just keep poking them with a sharpened stick to keep their fightin' spirit up.

Then I rassle 'em to the death.

The knife is for fighting off the grizzlies that are attracted by all the screaming.
