NEW DELHI: The United States closed its consular office and the American Center in India's commercial hub Mumbai on Tuesday and warned its citizens to maintain extra vigilance in view of a terror threat, a US official said.

"The (US diplomatic) message encourages American citizens in Mumbai consular areas to main a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase security," US Embassy spokesman David Kennedy told Reuters.

"We take the threat seriously enough."

He did not elaborate on the nature of the threat or which group was behind the threat.

The consular wing of the US mission in Mumbai, which issues visas, and the American Center, used for educational and cultural activities, were the two offices ordered shut.

Kennedy said the US embassy was working closely with Indian law enforcement agencies on security arrangements for American diplomatic and cultural offices in India.

The United States has consulates and cultural centres in several Indian cities, including Kolkata and Chennai, and thousands of American citizens work or travel in India at any given time.

It is not the Indian citizens these Americans must fear from, it is the Islamic mercenaries(read: terrorists) from the neighbourhood(Pakistan, Bangladesh, S.Arabia)who must be eliminated.

Frightening scenario. India and Pakistan both have the bomb, both have tested it, and it was a short time ago when both had troops gathering at their mutual borders.

There are approximately 1.2 billion people in India. According to the stats, 1 in 6 people on the planet are muslim (scary thought for you). you do the math. There is always hope, and logic, that the world is not a homogeneous blend, to it's best interests. Pray for logic by all religions of the the world, and watch out for TROP.

The ACLU is about as dangerous as militant Islam in my estimation. In fact, the former enables the latter.

What are the mottoes on the emblems?

The mottoes are those of the Indian Police in Bombay, the National Security Guard Commandos, the Special Forces and each one of these are heavily involved in anti-terror operations in and around India, with some of the best records of terror prevention in the world. And in India, it is ALMOST EVERYDAY that the terrorists plot to explode a bomb in crowded places.

There are 138 million plus muslims in India(the 2nd largest population after Indonesia). The Vast majority of them are far more civilised than their cousins in Pakiland or Saudi Arabia, given the constant close contact with Hindus & Christians.Muslims are pretty prominent in public life in India & if im not mistaken, one of the Commissioners of Police in Mumbai is a Muslim,Ahmed Javed.

The Hindus are good people and, potentially, our most valuable allies against both Islam and China. They are slowly coming around and economic ties are outpacing political breakthroughs (think outsourcing).
India has strong ties to Britain (their former masters) and therefore Britain is another bridge from USA to India.

What India needs to overcome is its communist past--they allied with the old USSR against USA and Pakistan. This was backwards of what should have been--from today's perspective. Most Indian papers that I read are still hopelessly anti-USA (just like CNN).

Try reading up on Indo-US ties from the period from 1962 to 1965-it may surprise u !!There were joint air exercises, special ops training & covert intell missions into China. It wasn't India's shift to the USSR that ended that brief phase of Indo-U
