Former CHEERS actress SHELLEY LONG has been rushed to hospital after taking a near-fatal overdose, reports British newspaper THE SUN.
The 55-year-old shot to fame playing feisty DIANE CHAMBERS in the 1980's sitcom, but has been plagued by tragedy in recent years after her husband, BRUCE TYSON ended their 22-year marriage in 2003, forcing her to sell their Hollywood mansion.
Friends believe the blonde beauty has been suffering severe depression and took a lethal number of pain killers in a bid to end her life.
One pal says, "A week ago, Shelley, who lives alone, kept the curtains drawn. She wasn't eating. She has always been thin, but she was almost skeletal."
Admittedly, I had to read his comment TWICE.
The rest of it sounded quite knowledgeable. LOL!
>>Sad!!! Wonder if she was on anti-depressant meds?! Those can make you more suicidal than if you weren't on them....i.e. Effexor. <<
This is a common mis-statement especially in the MSM. When an individual is severely depressed they get to a point where they cannot do anything -- eat, sleep, get dressed, they cannot do anything including commit suicide.
Once anti-depressant medication begins to work and the dark depression begins to lift, some level of energy returns BEFORE the depression itself is gone. It is during this initial phase of improvement that suicide becomes a danger. This has been known for more than 25 years and is true regardless of which anti-depressant is involved. This is the time that depressed patients need to be most watched but often are not.
I like a woman ya can dive into
I have always said I wouldn't want my worst enemy to suffer from depression the way I have in the past but I think you need to go through it just so you stop saying such cruel, insensitive, and ignorant things about those who are *really* suffering from depression. God help you.
I'll take your word for it ~ I make it a point to never watch a show that has a laugh track.
A friend of mines son just committed suicide almost 2 weeks ago. He was on anti-depressants for 15 years. Shot himself in the head in a field and they found him last tuesday. I also know of someone elses son who committed suicide after being on anti-depressants for years. Must be wonderful drugs....NOT.
It's so easy to blame the drugs...There's a reason that people who are depressed are on drugs. BECAUSE THEY'RE DEPRESSED AND SUICIDAL. Maybe he would have killed himself 10 years ago were he not on them. You'll never know.
Her people are denying this was an attempt to harm herself. They say she took an extra pain pill because her back hurt. I don't believe them! Wish she knew no man is worth killing yourself over!
Ooohhh...
I had just bought my first VCR when that episode of Cheers ran. I recorded it and played that part in slow motion over and over and over........

You know, I have that movie..........think I'll watch it this weekend. Michael Keaton was halarious!*~*
I was always SO in love with Diane Chambers. Shelly Long is from my town (Fort Wayne, IN- Southside High School) so this is even more disturbing for us around here.
Bless her, and hope she gets over this.
Remember the one where she and Frasier decided to only speak French to each other for a week? And then they couldn't marry because she developed a psychological "allergy" to him? She was great on that show.
No laugh track...it was filmed before a live audience.
I loved cheers when Shelly Long was in it. I stopped watching when she left. Hope she recovers and gets herself together.
Excellent, razor sharp analysis.
Your comments remind me of the description of neurotics: people who build castles in the air. Psychotics live in them. Psychiatrists charge rent.
I liked "Outrageous Fortune."
Very sorry to hear about your friend's son. Very often the drugs are the cause (prozac, especially).
Today we hear of a suicide from the Empire State Buiding.
This is the season for suicides. We should all keep an eye out for our friends and relatives who are prone to depression. Make sure they are not isolated over the holidays. Go drive grandma or grandpa out to eat and to see the Christmas lights. Take great-Aunt Mary shopping and to a movie. Invite that lonely neighbor to your children's Christmas Pageant. Don't let your friends or relatives feel alone and unloved at this time of year.
