Sprawl hits Mainers in the purse, group says
"But the group is likely to face opposition from property rights advocates, who say people should be able to live where they want. Those advocates argue that property taxes are high not because of sprawl, but because governments simply overspend."

We're having a tax revolt up here in Maine and the left is trying to tie their failed attempts (to zone us up to our eyeballs and regionalize our towns and schools) to the tax revolt. A strong "NO" showing in the poll will help our position.
Welcome to Free Republic.
I think sprawl, in general, is fine, but I don't support communities imposing large lot size zoning to keep population density down. I think that's an infringement on the market. Besides, high density zoning, such as for condos, usually works out well for the community, since condo dwellers usually have few kids.
Just do a google search for "UN agenda 21" and you will find ALL that you need to know about "sprawl" because this is where it is coming from!!!!!!!!!
The UN states that Americans freedom to own private property leads to an injustice around the world. This "sprawl" is nothing more than the taking of "private land" and coverting it to "public land" and if you do not go along with it, they just raise your property taxes so high that you cannot pay them and they "take" your private property that usually ends up being purchased by the government, which then is "public" property that they can control.
We are battling the so called "farmland preservation" idiots who think that if the government using our tax dollars to buy up the development rights from unsuspecting farmers, that this some how preserves the farmland for ever?
Go to www.americanfarmlandtrust.com and read all about this scam to take our private land using our own tax dollars. We are fighting hard to keep our rights in our private land.
Remember environmentalist do not believe in the right to own private land. These are the people who sit on your planning commissions and plan for the future of your community, that does not include Private Land.

Sprawl hits Mainers in the purse, group says.
What the heck? I just got back on the computer. Let me read this. I have pinged everyone I could on my Maine list.
It's a breath of fresh air to see you again at FR! : )
Dear Green - what happened with the proposition to decrease prop taxes in Maine?
Any time Gov Baldacci and past Gov King put their heads together, it can't be a good sign.
We have a lot of 'sprawl' up here in Aroostook County and it's called farm lands. What does Maine want to do....take away the farmers land now?!
Sprawl in Maine
Do you believe that sprawl in Maine contributes to the state's high property taxes?
Yes: 48.48%
No: 46.06%
Not sure: 4.24%
Don't care: 1.21%
The Polasky Tax Cap. It got voted down.
Well, thanks for the ping! :)
I'm still busy trying to load all these disks into this new puter. What a job!
If the number of school children is decreasing and growth is minimal, why has Maine been spending all that money on new schools?
You guys are infected with leftists. I caught all kinds of flack down at the harbor (Sorrento - across Frenchman Bay from Bar Harbor) this summer over my Bush/Cheney bumper sticker. I wish I had a "W" flag, I'd fly it from my boat next summer.
You are kidding me! It got voted down??? I thought for sure when I was up there this summer that it was going to pass. Bummer.
It's rediculous. Maine started going down hill when King got elected. Served 8 years. Then, my Gawd, Baldacci was voted in! The budget hasn't seen the light of day in a long time!
But, I think Maine might be moving in the right direction. The vote out of Maine for the President was FnKerry (ugh I can't even stand typing his name) was 52% and President Bush was 46%.
But Maine is so rat infested, it makes me want to throw up. It's because Fat Ted Kennedy has a strangle hold on New England!
Oh no. We lost that one. The rats put ads on TV day and night saying that the cops and firemen wouldn't get paid and that the schools would be closing, etc etc. And I guess the general public believed them.
I still voted for it. It seems every bond issue I vote against, wins. Never fails. The people just don't understand that when a bond passes, they better start digging deeper into their pockets, because SOMEONE has to pay for them!
Mainers will never learn.
Portland is part of your problem - one major rats nest. Maine has got to start recruiting companies to come up there but that isn't going to happen with the high tax rate and high cost of living.
I've looked at land in Maine - coastal Maine is outta sight. So is any kind of camp up on one of the lakes. The rest of Maine goes for a song. But the taxes and and lack of amenities once you're either north of Portland or inland make it too expensive, particularly considering how short the summer is.
I will continue to just rent a place when I come up to go sailing.
This group has something to do with Angus King. Angus King a man who makes the Lege pass a mandate then starts a company to fullfill it...for a price.
They were complaining on GAN this morning that there is too much sprawl in Maine.
Maine people voted for YEARS not to widen the turnpike in order to AVOID sprawl. Over and over the initiative was on the ballot.
The gove...and I am sure it was Angus, overturned the will of the people and started the mess he is now trying to manipulate.
Plain old creeping socialism that is paid with taxpayer dollars. If you want some fun, try tracing the dollar trail in both real cash and tax deductions. Then, also follow the dollars paid to "manage" these new preserved property rights. This a big trough for feeding the liberal left.
