Rare poison used on Yushchenko, doctors say

Ukraine's opposition leader, Viktor Yushchenko was poisoned in an assassination attempt during campaigning in September, a British daily reported yesterday, quoting the doctor who oversaw his treatment.

Doctors at the Rudolfinerhaus clinic in Vienna were close to identifying the substance that left Mr Yushchenko's face disfigured with cysts and lesions, Nikolai Korpan was quoted as telling The Times.

Specialists in Britain, the US and France had helped to establish that it was a biological or chemical agent or, most likely, a rare poison that struck Mr Yushchenko down before the presidential election, Dr Korpan said. Doctors needed to examine him again to confirm their diagnosis, but "we are now sure that we can confirm which substance caused this illness", the doctor said. "He received this substance from other people who had a specific aim."

Asked if the aim had been to kill him, Dr Korpan said: "Yes, of course."

Proof that Mr Yushchenko was deliberately poisoned would be a devastating blow for his rival, the Prime Minister, Viktor Yanukovich, as the two candidates prepare for a repeat of a presidential run-off on December 26, The Times said.

Mr Yushchenko had said recently that he would soon reveal proof that his opponents had tried to assassinate him, but a spokeswoman said he had no plans to travel to Vienna, the newspaper said.

Mr Yushchenko fell ill on September 6 and was taken to Rudolfinerhaus four days later with severe abdominal pain and lesions on his face and trunk, The Times said.

His liver, pancreas and intestines were swollen and his digestive tract covered in ulcers, but doctors could not explain the symptoms.

Against their advice he went back on the campaign trail after a week, but returned to the clinic two weeks later with back pain.

His Austrian doctors had said previously they had no proof of a criminal poisoning.

Nevertheless his campaign staff have insisted the medical exam revealed that Mr Yushchenko's illness had been caused "by a viral infection and chemical substances that are not usually found in food products".

This reminds me of the days when the KGB sent out assassins armed with poison-tipped umbrellas.

I don't think there's much doubt about this poisoning story. Yushchencko may be a Socialist, and he may be supported by Soros and the Euroswine, but he's infinitely preferable to the alternative. Better a pal of Chirac's running the Ukraine than to see the Ukraine disappear permanently into the maw of a new USSR.

Putin has clearly gone off his rocker. He has blown the opportunity to work with Bush against Russia's dangerous Islamic enemies to the south. In fact there's some evidence that he has encouraged these Islamic terrorists because he prefers them to the Chechen "nationalists," a dangerous mistake in my view.

Only yesterday Putin visited Iraq and issued an insulting criticism of the acting head of state there, with whom he had just met. He's angry because he has lost his cushy oil for weapons deals with Saddam. But again, his behavior is stupid. Saddam is gone and he seems to be foaming at the mouth with sheer vindictiveness. It's not in Russia's interest to make an even firmer enemy of the new Iraq.

Pock-marked? Is that caused by some type of pox, like chicken pox or small pox? For those conspiracy buffs, all those fowl that China had to kill off a few years back. Wonder if they developed an agent from the fowl and sold it on the black market? What a scenario!

Doesn't Russia (or ex-USSR scientists who are hiding it) actually still have the small pox virus? Seems I heard that on a documentary not that long ago.

=== they were still the same old Commies. (same old dirty tactics) Just underground now.

Underground?

Are you paying attention to how much were paying former KGB and Stasi to implement Patriot I and II under the sure-to-be-signed legislatoin creating our Ministry of Information?

The upcoming Annus Horribilus is going to come as a real shocker to many.

I am amazed the poor guy survived such a venomous onslaught. He must be tough as nails! God bless him and protect him.

I agree, very difficult to follow even the major topics. I've been using http://orangeukraine.squarespace.com/ to at least try to keep up.

You're right. Soros must have had it done to him to garner a sympathy vote. I'm sure the KGB guy backing the other canidate would never do anything shady.

Those pictures were taken five months apart. Whoever tried to kill him is both stunned and ticked off that they did not succeed.

I'll bet they're ready to try again, and that may be one unfortunate end-game scenario in this amazing story.

If Putin was capable of ordering this guys assassination through poison (obviously, still a big question), kind of makes you wonder if there was any more to those apartment bombings that were blamed exclusively on the Chechen rebels years back. Very conveniently timed.

His hair line is different, his eyebrow line is different, and his ear line is different. He was not poisoned, he was replaced.

I think that's due to the swelling.

Rare smacks of KGB. Putins up to his ears in this one.

Ya beat me to it...looks like Dubya needs to have a talk with Pooty-Poot about such campaign tactics.

It was reported by one doctor, he suspected he was given a large dose of dioxin. The doctor said he might recover in a couple of years but it doesn't seem likely the scarring would disappear, assuming it was dioxin.

Swelling does not turn grey hair black, does not change the arch of an eyebrow to a broken angle or make the hair line move to a new arc.

The way a man holds his eyes is also unique, this new guy holds his eyes closed in a linear squint, the other guy is a relaxed oval.

Look at his ears, the new guy ears sit out farther from his head in a parallel, in the before picture the ears are a rounded arc closer to the head. Swelling would have accentuated the arc not made them flatter, yet stick out further.

Nope, this is a plant and a poor one to boot. He fails on at least 4 basic biometric lines. This guy is not even close. I give the GRU a D-, but time is short on this one. Hell all the "intelligence" services are bozos now a days.

Give them a few months for some real surgery and I am sure he will look much better. After the swelling goes down...

I'm curious what the poison is?

You could certainly use it to terrorize the Hollywood pack.
