RALEIGH, N.C. — A Marine who was reported abducted in Iraq last summer and later turned up in his native Lebanon was charged Thursday with desertion.

Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun was charged following a five-month investigation into his June disappearance from a U.S. military camp near Fallujah, Iraq, according to a statement from the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (search) at Camp Lejeune.

Hassoun, of West Jordan, Utah, is accused of taking unauthorized leave from the unit where he served as an Arabic interpreter.

Well, it looks as though many of us were right, even though we wanted to be wrong.

It looks that way, although he's only been charged, not convicted.

Too much of this whole incident reeked like a dead herring, right from the start. Who knows - maybe he was getting pressured by one of his indigenous heathen brethren over there, got confused, and bolted.

Yup, Had my suspicions all along.
Just TOO Convienent, and no other american has been captured by the Terrorists and lived to tell about it. They've never had any problems killing muslims either.

Which brings up a point: Since everyone who falls into their hands ends up decapitated, why is our government still proceeding with the fiction that adhearing to the Geneva conventions "Protects our troops"?

I thought there was something fishy about the whole thing from the beginning...especially by the way the Pentagon was dancing around the notion of this being a real hostage situation. They knew something was wrong with the whole thing. I'm not saying he's guilty, but there was enough wrong with the story to charge him.

Lets see, two Muslim GIs have made the national news. One faked his own kidnapping and deserted, the other rolled a grenade into the tent housing his fellow soldiers. Seems like the heart of American Muslim soldiers has shown itself pretty clearly.

"During fighting last month in Fallujah, U.S. troops recovered Hassoun's personal belongings in a box on the third floor of a three-story commercial building. The property included an identification card, a uniform and a book."

Sure does sound like something smells fishy in Denmark. All his stuff ends up in Fallujah where most of the terrorists have their IED's, bombs, and beheading rooms. Makes one wonder if he helped out taking prisoners to Fallujah and that's how he got his "release" from the group?

Reading between the lines of news articles yields whole bunches of questions and the desire for more answers. Why desertion? Why not treason? He did make a video while "captive". The cover story stunk to begin with.

It may be the problem is that there is a "American Muslim Military". Seems to be a conflict of interests to me. I served in the military during the Viet Nam era and I do not recall a "American VC Military" except for Hanoi Jane and John Kerry.
As usual, the Political Correctness that we are constantly reminded of Bites Us in the area that we all sit on.

I believe the Geneva Convention applies to military personell, not terrorists. We should not allow the "rules of war" to apply to a group of people who have no rules.

In WW2, thousands of Japanese-Americans served in the US Army. Even though their culture was Japanese, they saw themselves as Americans first. Something that cannot be said of Muslims since their first loyalty MUST BE TO ISLAM.

Thomas Fleming did . . . and he was one of the first to be abducted.

Then get their loyalty the hell out of the Military of the U.S.A.
and let our Troops do their job without any questions as to whether to "Islamist" next to me friend or foe..
