The 17th-century Puritans are a bad analogy. They were moving to a virgin land, one where they could do their own thing and sink or swim by their own efforts. The Dutch emigres are moving into a going society, one that has the same deadly forces as the ones they are leaving.

Wasn't exactly virgin...and a lot of activist groups will pointedly point that out to you.

Yes, I know most of this Boer history. I had a Boer friend in college, and got my heart broken by another Boer (a Voortrekker descendant no less) some years later. Southern California is crawling with them. There's even a butcher shop on Wilshire boulevard that makes and sells highly addictive substances known as "biltong" and "boerewors". Yum!

I realize that many Boers are too poor to emigrate and/or are too tied to the land by centuries of culture. Nevertheless, if Holland REALLY wanted to solve its Moslem problem, handing out free visas to every willing Boer would be a good start.

As for Boers in the American Southwest -- I'm aware of this too. On a hunting trip a few years ago, my friends and I were far, far out in the depths of the California desert, and lo and behold, there were a couple of small settlements with Afrikaner names. We surmised that perhaps Afrikaner mining engineers were brought in to extract the minerals or some such scenario, but we don't know for sure -- we didn't meet anyone we could ask.

BTW --regarding "stopboergenocide.com" -- more power to them. A noble ethnic group such as the Boers deserves to survive. They need to get their fertility rates up though. Have you read "Death of the West" by Pat Buchanan, regarding that subject?

Most of the Afrikaners I know don't care to move to Europe. They're going to Australia and New Zealand and elsewhere.

Rats leaving the sinking ship. How noble of them. Now they can spread their plague of "tolerance at all costs" to other formerly great countries.

Venice Beach in particular... that's the one thing I remember walking with my ex. The young people have already learned to be good spoiled brats and annoyed my ex to no end *LOL* He was very into preserving the afrikaans language which a lot of young people are forgetting and prefer to speak english.

Ellen, 43, a lawyer and banker who votes for the free-market Liberals,

This goes right to your point. She votes for these liberals and then runs out on the mess she helped create. You know she is going to take these well-meaning but non-productive ideas and votes with her. Another case of Cosmic Justice.

The "Liberal" party here is almost certainly the VVD (Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie - the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy), and it is a free-market, lower regulation party. While it's certainly not as free-market as the US Republican party, it's the most free-market of any of the mainstream Dutch political parties. Liberal in Europe tends to mean the party that is most free market (sort of in the 19th century meaning).

Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Somalian MP who has spoken out against Islam's treatment of women, is now a member of the VVD (she was previously a member of the Labor party.

I don't see why people are fleeing. It's not as if they are fleeing Castro or Mugabe.

Can you even picture what that is like? It is so strange to me to even think of a 5 week vacation let alone thinking it is my right.

It's a consequence of higher taxes. Suppose your boss at your job said that next year, you could get a 3% raise or 2 more weeks of vacation. You'd probably take the vacation days, unless you hate your family and dread the thought of spending more time with them. At 5%, 10%, wherever, you take the money. There's some point where you'd opt for the money.

In Europe, if you take the money, then the government takes most of it. So in Europe, the vacation days would get a higher priority, because if you get 5 weeks of paid vacation, you don't have to work for the government for 2 weeks. But if you get an extra 50,000 euros, you have to pay 20,000 to the government. So people shift their desires to more vacation time and lower salary increases. So taxes provide a disincentive to work, for even those that do have jobs.
