If it is reactor coolant, yes.

I used to sit on the edge of a uranuim bathtub reactor with nothing but water between me and the core. We used to turn all the lights out in the reactor room and crank the reactor up to 600 megawatts. The blue glow from the Cerenkov radiation was beautiful. It is pretty cool watching the core glow blue with your own eyes. :-)

My boo-boo---I'm used to PWR's.

How do they handle the radioactivity in the BWR after it goes through the turbine and into the condensate system?

Soundls like a lot of extra shielding and the like (but a lot less corrosion, though)

I still the problems they had with FERMI-1 when I was a kid.

Nice to see that FERMI-2 has a lot better record.

Lots of shielding. The trade off of a simple, component wise, system such as the BWR compared to a PWR with more components means that potentially more radiaoactive systems and areas exist with a BWR design as compared to a PWR. You need a lot more shielding with a BWR. Access to more areas require suiting up. With a PWR, water chemistry is super critical. Tube corrosion and eventual leaks in the steam generators require tube plugging or sleeving. Lots of tubes plugged means reduced power output. Some plants have been forced to replace steam generators which is a mammoth project since the plants weren't designed for steam generator replacement.

A BWR doesn't have steam generators but you have to monitor more areas and systems for radioactive leaks. You learn real quick not to wear anything made out of a polyester blend at a BWR site. Just walking across the turbine deck will cause you to pick up enough radioactivity to setoff the portal monitors. It's short half-life stuff which means you have to stand around and look stupid until the stuff decays.

Accessing the condensor bay in a PWR is simple. There's no radioactivity. At a BWR plant, it's a high rad area.

It's an artistic rendering combining symbols both American and Persian and is called United We Stand. (as in against the Iranian regime and for a free and democratic Iran)

Like I said---I was around the PWR.

MANY thanks for the full explaination.

I remember the chemistry stuff and all the corrosion problems. I still remember the SG replacement project at Indian Point 2.

Even with all the extra tubing--give me less power and a PWR anytime. I like turbines--and being near them.

I wasn't a nuke myself--not even in submarines.
My background was conventional steamplants (civilian)

I always had a lot of fun going to the power stations (nuclear and fossil) with Dad (trained in PWR's---I'm am from a family of nukes.) A few cousins were involved in the construction of Shoreham (BWR!)---then it's dismantlement. Always thought that was a disgrace.

anyway---thanks again!

"Maybe if you and others tried to understand that the roots of the alleged Bigotry come from the hearts of MANY people who have been adversely affected by the actions of the Islamofascists, and that they have a right to be angry at all Muslims, but it is all talk, they are not going to act on it."

Since Islamofascists are not ALL muslims, as you have rightly identified, I believe you've given the definition of bigotry.

As for free speech, I suppose your friends have informed you, that FR has posting rules and it is not a democracy.
If not, please go to the home page and check out the rules.

As for free speech, I suppose your friends have informed you, that FR has posting rules and it is not a democracy.

So you're saying that the 1st amendment is not applicable here? How about identifying the quotes you posted? (name of poster and where it's from).

From the guidlines: Please: NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts.

I guess we need to define "Racism". Last I looked there were three main races, with subgroups for each: Caucasian, Negroid and Mongoloid. Saying something against Islam is not racist, it may be intolerant, but not racist.

I'll ask you what I asked CG: Do the jews have a right to be mad at all Germans for the Holocaust?

Do the Chinese have the right to be mad at all Japanese for the Rape of Nanking and other war crimes?

Do Americans that lost loved ones at Pearl Harbor have the right to hate the Japanese?

Do the Palestinians have the right to hate ALL jews for the actions of the Israelis? and so on...

If you have questions or don't like the rules, take it up with Jim.
Goodnight.

Chemist Geek does not follow the rules---or do you only hold those that are not friends and family to said rules?

Do I sense a little discrimintaion here?

If you don't like being questioned, don't make statements that breed questions.

Sleep tight.
