When I was in college I had an American roommate, and a roommate from Japan. The American guy showed us the tattoo on his ankle, which he said meant "best friend" in Japanese writing. His best friend had the same tattoo. My Japanese roommate looked at the tattoo and started laughing hysterically. The tattoo meant "lovers forever." My American roommate nearly fainted.
