STATE OF THE UNION -- 2005 [Live Thread]
2/2/05

Posted on 02/02/2005 3:43:44 PM PST by Timeout

The pre-spin: Bush will spend about 1/2 the speech on foreign policy, 1/2 on domestic, with heavy emphasis on Social Security reform. It's said he will provide a detailed tutorial on the SS system and its problems with a few details on his personal accounts proposal.

Laura's guests are said to be an Afghan voter and an Iraqi voter (too bad there's no Ukrainian wearing an orange hat!).

Should we start a drinking game on how many times the pool camera swings to Hillary? Hmmm. Probably not...it would likely hamper out typing ability.

Word on the blogs has it that the closing part of the speech is a hum-dinger. Set your VCR's.

Report here on outrageous MediaCrat spin before AND after the SOTU. Pictures and screen caps welcome.

What world do you live in? It isn't the real one. Get real, and then we can talk. If not, then, sorry, no can do.

And do not bother saying that Bush could lead us directly to phasing out Social Security by announcing that as his intention, just like he is leading the world toward more freedom. In political America, it does not work that way.

What you need to get is that one day, Social Security as we know it will not be anything like today, or even much like what Bush proposes. It will be more like what you wish, and the man who will had the political capital and the cajones to start us down that road without being so stupid as to say it in so many words, will have been George W Bush.

And as an enormous side-benefit, the Dem party will be in ruins because of their untenable positions on such matters...also brought about by Bush.

Has anyone provided you with the story yet of Byron Norwood? I have a newspaper article that is heartwarming. I cannot send it now but will do so later.

Sure. Click your heels together and repeat that three times and it just might come true. You are the one who is disillusioned if you think adding more government control is the answer--especially considering this is the president who gave us the biggest, most expensive government in almost 40 years.

When has government ever been able to solve a problem it created? Never.

You're right. How many times a week does Sean do that with Clinton quotes or old Kerry quotes. Nice trick once but it frankly strikes me as lazy to do it every single day.

No, Joe. I think you speak for people, who you don't *represent*. I NEVER want to be included in your *our*.

You live in a different universe.

Boy, do I agree with that, Citizen!

Joe, who do you think is in those mass graves in Iraq? Who do you think were tortured and killed over the past 35 years??

Answer.......thousands who 'stood up to Saddam.'

Your characterization of the Iraqis as people who sat idly by and passively let us save them is wrong.

In the first place, they had to find out if we were 'for real' when we first invaded.........the people in the Middle East haven't exactly been told the truth about us, you know......

They have been giving info about terrorists at their own risk, they have been standing in line to sign up to be police officers, getting blown up, and having their brothers take their places. They have joined the militia, been blown up, and have had their friends and neighbors take their places.

Then EIGHT MILLION of them risked life and limb to vote in support of us, and what we have done for them.

No one is saying they shouldn't be thanking us........they are........ but for you to say we shouldn't appreciate them and their courage is utter stupidity.

You clearly have no idea as to what has really been going on in Iraq, and that's probably because you are the most overtly self-centered, heartless, negative person who has managed to keep from being permanently banned from FR.

You don't represent anyone but yourself when you refer to "us." Your US is really just ME, and frankly, your selfishness sickens me.

BARF ALERT!

http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/releases/pr_2005_0202.html

Statement by John Kerry on State of the Union Address
For Immediate Release

Washington, DC - "President Bush said tonight that the state of our union is strong and confident, but millions of Americans know it can and must be stronger. The best way we can instill real confidence in their future is if we follow the true mandate of the last election -- a mandate for unity and true bipartisanship. The political campaigns are over and now we must get down to work. For the 11 million children in this country without health care, we must make our union stronger. For our brave soldiers in Iraq and their families, we must act now in the wake of the Iraqi elections to give them reasons to be as confident about their future as they are courageous under fire.

"The best way to begin genuine bipartisanship to make America stronger is to work together on the real crises facing our country, not to manufacture an artificial crisis to serve a special interest agenda out of touch with the needs of Americans.

"Our country faces a real crisis in health care, a real challenge of record budget deficits, and every American deserves a real plan to improve retirement security -- not weaken it. The problems of health care can be solved if we stop giving tax cuts to those who have the most, and start making health care affordable for those working harder and harder for too little. I was disappointed the President did not spend more time addressing this problem that keeps millions of Americans up at night worrying about their children's future.

"The problems facing Social Security 50 years down the road can be fixed tomorrow if Washington ends the borrow-and-spend policies that are running up a record debt and dumping it on the backs of our children. The challenge of retirement security can be solved if we sit down in the true spirit of bipartisanship and make it possible for young people to save and invest while still guaranteeing that Social Security remains insurance against poverty and disability that can never be wiped away.

"Watching Iraqis go to the polls for the first time was an inspiring beginning this week, but we can't stop there. It wouldn't have been possible without the bravery of American troops. I am glad the White House will at long last act to provide a $250,000 benefit for the families of troops who've made the ultimate sacrifice. We must do more for those who give of themselves for God and country. But the greatest tribute to the memory of the fallen is an exit strategy called success. Elections were an important milestone, but to go the distance the President must now bring other countries to the side of the Iraqis to rapidly train a security force capable of providing stability. Even more critical is bringing Iraqis together and making clear to millions of Sunnis who stayed home that they have a stake in a secure nation.

"We must succeed in Iraq, but we must also wage and win a more effective War on Terror. We must never take our eye off the ball in the greater struggle against extremism. I was disappointed that the President didn't mention Osama bin Laden's name once tonight. Wherever that terrorist who has murdered Americans is hiding tonight, he should know America will never rest until we've destroyed him and his terrorist network.

"The state of our union -- our faith, our families, our values -- is strong, but we must challenge ourselves and challenge Washington to make the country we love as strong as the freedom that makes it special."

I caught a CSPIN broadcast of LIEberman addressing a jewish caucus at the dem convention in Boston.

He began his remarks by stating that the republicans stole the election in 2000.

The man is a snake in the grass but for now he's a thorn in the side of the dems.

They elevated him to veep candidate and now can only stand by and watch with hatred but silence.

I love how the liberals are all using the words "faith" and "God" in all their speeches in the last 2 weeks. If they just would have done that during the election, I would have voted for Kerry. Maybe they are finally "getting it". /sarcasm

The problem is that Republicans can't even bring themselves to admit that the entire concept of a government-controlled retirement plan is not only unconstitutional, but immoral. Until we get to that point, things will keep getting worse.

No, the problem is not what the Republicans want. The problem is what the electorate wants.

If you can't bring yourself to admit that, then you will never be part of the solution.

Massachusetts has poured way more money into the welfare sinkholes of Montana and North Dakota over the last 20 years than we've gotten back for our highway projects. Even at the peak of Tip O'Neill's career, we were barely breaking even on federal taxes. Now it's closer to 78 cents on the dollar.

Running Amtrak through Montana is one of the most wasteful expenses in the federal budget.

Right you are oWf. Saddam wasn't killing and torturing those who were passive.

Why would he Joe?

Speaking of sinkholes....Does that include the $15 Billion Kerry and Kennedy obtained for underground ferry system known as the "Big Dig"?

Facts always get in the way when you have a deep bias.

That's why Joe says the things he does........his bias clouds reality, not unlike those on the left, who have different political views, but the same problem with reality.
