Today Show: Katie Muses over Domination of Iraq by Iran, Insurgency "Galvanized" by Elections?

It's clearly been a difficult grieving process for Katie. The success of the Iraqi elections was obviously a painful blow to the superannuated cheerleader, and she's struggling to regain her equilibrium

Working through the various stages of healing, Katie for the time being seems somewhat stuck in the "denial" phase, in which she cannot bring herself to accept that the elections were indeed successful and have given Iraq a fighting chance to move toward democracy.

Thus it was that in her interview of NBC reporter Richard Engel, reporting from Baghdad, Katie chose to emphasize the negative.

The premise of Couric's first question was that those wacky mullahs in Iran will have inordinate influence over the Shiites who will dominate the new Iraqi government.

Engel abetted this gloomy view, mentioning that the head of one of the major new Iraqi parties spent 20 years in Iran and was a member of something called the Bomber Brigades (not clear exactly who they were bombing). He also mentioned that the Iranians are contributing to charities in a couple of Shiite-majority cities.

Engel did mention that the Shiites failed to garner a sufficient majority to establish a government entirely on their own, and thus that the Kurds will have a chance to play kingmaker.

Next, obviously distraught over the insurgents' possibly waning influence, Katie asked: "after the election, some had a feeling that the insurgents weren't as all-powerful as they had been portrayed. But since the election, 108 people have been killed in various insurgent attacks."

Couric then moved to the question of the day, in which her own hopes and dreams were clearly on display: "So, have the elections galvanized the insurgents or [Heaven forbid] placated them?"

Engel surmised that the elections have placed the insurgents "in an awkward position. Prior to the election they could argue they were fighting US occupation but as Iraqis take over they have to find a new angle. Now they are trying to delegitimize the government and are finding some support among Sunnis."

If Iraq continues on its path toward democracy, we're all going to have to come together to be supportive of Katie, as she plunges deeper into grief and depression.

Katie, we're here for you!

Meanwhile, Dan Senour was on Fox from Baghdad VERY encouraged by the Iraqi's determination to move forward, and how they are pretty much ignoring the violence.

Did you ever notice all the lines around her mouth? I bet she isn't looking forward to HD TV. She will need more Dermabrasion treatments or Bondo and sanding work.

I think we should all wish the Iraqis the best while recognizing the future is their's to make for themselves. If they choose a religiously based government, so be it. Mideast Muslims have always marveled at the West's ability for bloodless, democratic changes of government. Unfortunately, Islam has never figured out how do this while attempting to meld democratic principles with its faith. Iraq faces the same struggle. Actually, the greatest hope for success in this challenge may be Iran.

The phrase "bomber brigades" appears only 29 times on the internet as discovered by Google. Many of these references are to conflicts not taking place in the Middle East, and not taking place in our time.

The only one that refers to Iran is on what appears to be a ==gasp== blog called sciforums.com.

Could Katie and Jim be passing on unverified info from a blog?

You raise a fair point, IMHO. I certainly would never say that Iraq has assured a democratic future for itself. It will be a rocky road and the future is very much in doubt.

Still, I think it's telling that Couric seems clearly to be hoping for the worst - in her mind, anything is fair game so long as it hurts the hated Republicans.

A number of commentators have mentioned that because even the Shiites didn't get a majority, there will have to be a certain amount of good, old-fashioned horse-trading. If the Iraqis can manage that -- as opposed to good, old-fashioned murdering other factions -- they have a fair chance. (Hoping and praying!)

Robin Wright's article in today's Washington Post laid out the new party line: Iraq elected a government close to Iran and America was dealt a major setback. Yeah really. Do you think the unelected Iranian mullahs were happy over a Shiite-led government in Baghdad that has to share power with Kurds and Sunni Arabs? Think again. For the legacy mdia, its all doom and gloom. If its not the terrorist insurgency, its something else. Good news for America is the last thing on their minds.

Well put. I've wondered from early in the process whether it might not have been preferable to have created three separate republics: Kurd, Sunni and Shiite, or perhaps a loose federation among the three. I'm concerned that we could be attempting to create another Yugoslavia that is destined to spin apart eventually. In the meantime, I'll hope for the best, along the lines you describe.

It still cracks me up how Katie wore black for three days after Bush beat her beloved Karry.

"Karry" = "Kerry."

Using a different keyboard today AND my typing just naturally sucks.
