WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Elizabeth Cheney, the daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites), will become the second-ranking U.S. diplomat for the Middle East, the State Department said on Monday.

Cheney, who previously worked in the department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and left to work on her father's 2004 re-election campaign, will become the bureau's principal deputy assistant secretary of state.

This is the bureau's second ranking position and deputizes for the assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs, the top U.S. diplomat for the Middle East.

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters Cheney would also serve as "coordinator for Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives" -- a U.S.-backed idea to try to spread democratic and economic reform in the region.

"Her duties will include a focus on U.S. bilateral and multilateral efforts to support freedom, democracy and expanded education and economic opportunities in the broader Middle East and North Africa," he said.

If you listen carefully you can hear the DUmmies' heads exploding :)

They're busy looking for a Halliburton connection.

Actually, they both did in consecutive debates. Hard to fathom, but true.

But, you're right, JF'nK was the one I was mocking.

Edwards brought it up in his debate first, but nobody really noticed because they were just staring at that thing on his lip.

Kerry brought it up after that, and then it became an issue.

It was during the debate with Chaney. Remember, and Chaney had a stone look on his face when Edwards said that. and there was this long silence and then Chaney responded with something like Thankyou for your comments. Edwards looked like such an idiot.

Oh that was such a classic moment.

Rather an odd phrase given the context.......

She isn't shoving it down people's throats.

It really is interesting watching the Democrat party and their reaction to becoming the minority party in this country. They're still somewhere between denial and grief. They sure haven't gotten to acceptance.

As long as she is not posted to that neighborhood, it should be OK. Otherwise, too risky.

It's fun watching them scramble around for something to stand for.

But the truth is, they never really stood for anything.

Ahaa, they did both say it, but the specific statement I remembered was Kerry..."I think if you asked Mary Cheney, she would tell you she is just being who she is". (paraphrasing)

We can all agree that Kerry and Edwards are both doofuses. To stupid to find their @sses with both hands.

Correct me if I'm wrong Whistling, but I believe that that was sarcasm in reference to John F'ing Kerry's stupid statement about Mary Cheney during a debate.

Whistling's comment in that context is funny.

I thought that as well. Stated as someone from the old media might report this news. Totoally unrelated slam for no reason than to be mean, much as JK did.

Huh? Is this a new FR rule we need to know about? It's now mandatory to put the /sarcasm tag in before using sarcasm?
