But seriously, folks, is it something exotic or just something that's dark, instead of shiny? If there were a bunch of rocks floating around without stars, we wouldn't be able to see those, either, without reflected light, would we?

Yes, but those rock things weren't around in the beginning, but ,rather, were made by stars and supernova. There are ways of estimating that there have not been enough stars to create all of the mass needed for the universe to exist like it is, even if the rocks are all hidden.

An invisble galaxy that you can see distant stars thru and is there because "they" say its there... but you can't see it because its (cough) "dark matter"..

The nearly undetectable neutron and the even more nearly undetectable neutrino both were proposed and looked for during the same time. There were two neutral unseen particles thought to exist; and people looked; and those that saw went to Stockholm.
