Blue States Secession: One Southerner’s Perspective
CONSERVATIVE TRUTH.ORG ^ | NOVEMBER 22, 2004 | JAMES ATTICUS BOWDEN

Posted on 02/23/2005 9:13:07 PM PST by CHARLITE

Liberals are talking about the Blue States seceding from the Union. There’s a map on the Internet of the Blue States joining Canada. This is too serious for idle talk from the chattering class. Secession, if followed by invasion, conquest, occupation and ultimately cultural cleansing, is a terrible thing. Trust me, Southerners know about this. We need to help these Liberal hotheads cool down.

First, are the root causes worthy of sundering the Great Experiment – Democracy in America? Apparently, the two most important reasons for secession are partial-birth abortion and homosexual marriage. The Liberals are kidding, right? They can’t live in a society that bans infanticide – as every state did before the U.S. Supreme Court made up law, science and medicine in 1973. And, Liberals can’t survive where homosexuals can’t marry – as they never have, ever, from the tiniest tribe to the greatest (and most decadent) civilizations - until last year in the Netherlands? Ok, maybe we can’t make an argument against the sanctity of life and marriage just to keep the Liberals from leaving.

Second, there are serious survival issues of National Defense. The Red States would probably keep the nukes, since the Blue States would find them so environmentally offensive. I reckon the Red States, with 150 to 200 million people, are the same size of the whole U.S. from WW II through most of the Cold War (WW III). We can field large enough Armed Services since the South, Heartland and West are over-represented in today’s ranks. Red forces can keep women well away from combat – it’s a Southern thing about men protecting women and women nurturing families.

Third, will we lose WW IV? Blue States, like France and Germany, may not want to fight the Islamists anywhere we find their snake pits. Red States could lead the Coalition of the Willing, just as they provide the backbone today for U.S. will. Red States will never abandon Israel – it’s an Evangelical Christian thing about loving the Jews. So, fighting the Islamists for centuries appears not to be a problem.

But, certainly, there has to be some ruin. If the Blue States secede and join socialist, Criminalizing-Christian speech Canada, then they would be like Canada. That means we could ignore the Blue States totally, not care less about what they say or do, and make money trading with them – like Canada? This secession may not be a bad idea after all. Something must be terrible on the domestic front.

First, the Red States could live in a Federal Republic, like the Founders’ intended, with a Constitutionally-limited National Government – and an awesome military. The Blue States couldn’t impose their Liberal rule through a tyrannical judiciary. Today’s Judiciary would be abolished and rebuilt with strict Constitutional constructionist judges.

Second, the Red States could control illegal immigration without black-robed priest kings ruling away sovereignty from the bench. Hey, that means the Red States could control which Yankees move south? We could ban too many from contributing to urban sprawl and never, just never, stop telling us how it isn’t like ‘up North’? Our Judeo-Christian and Confederate heritage could be respected as history. End PC multiculturalism? Yi, Yi!

Third, the Blue States are ‘donor’ states to the Red in taxes that go into Federal programs. The Red States would have to live with fewer Federal programs, lower taxes and less Federal regulation. Possibly, the Red State governments would be poorer but individuals would be freer. Is that a bad thing? Every Southerner is descended from people who were dirt poor, values rich, and heroically strong after that last unpleasant attempt at secession. There are far worse things than being poor. Besides, truth is, the Capitalist Red economy would expand faster than Blue Socialism.

There has to be reason to beg the Blue States to stay. Surely, there’s something.

Hmmm, we will never be ruled by Hillary…makes you wonder.

Okay, just let the Blue States go. We can work out the borders. Big Red will need a corridor across California to San Diego for our Pacific port and fleet. Blue gets Washington, DC. Red gets the Pentagon. Maybe Arlington Cemetery will be an international zone, but Red will guard it. Blue gets the United Nations headquarters and debt. How about a coin toss for the name - United States of America - and for Old Glory as the flag? If Red loses, I know a design we can use with the Cross of St. Andrew.

I'm looking foward to being Dixie-bound, believe me. There is no place greater than the South!

I spent a bit more than the previous half-decade in the area of Memphis and North Mississippi, and pretty well agree with you, though there are indeed faults to be found there too, best corrected by the locals over time rather than by meddling outsiders, well-meaning or carpetbagging.

But I've spent longish periods outside this country, and time in the American West of Texas and Wyoming, as well, and found my Southern neighbors a lot like them. Indeed, I think it's more accurate to say that the South has set the standard for neighborliness, graciousness and care for each other that much of the rest of the nation found worthy of emulation, and did so.

I'm as glad to note that the best of the Southerners I've known can be pretty good at pig-headedness and ferocity, if need be, too. I admired those traits as much as the others, and I hope some of that sticks with me too, no matter where I hang my hat.

God bless the south, and Long Live Free Dixie!

But the fact that the idea of secession is coming into the mainstream is a glimmer of hope. Just think how things would have been different if the War of 1812 would have carried on a few months more...

It doesn't show. And it doesn't look like he's put much thought into this. Immediate post-election reactions are bound to look silly even a few months later. Bowden's certainly does.

Suggest that you go view this one by James Atticus Bowden, which he wrote on Oct. 6, 2003, but it's just as valid today, and even more so, because Dean is now DNC chairman and in the hunt for votes in the south.

He's just telling people what they want to hear. Like this:

So, fighting the Islamists for centuries appears not to be a problem.

Splitting up the country would be a major headache. Afterwards, I really doubt either half would play anything like the kind of role on the world stage that we play now, or that anyone overseas would really bother much to listen. Divide the country and you change our place in the world and our foreign policy. You don't need to be a "futurist" to understand that.

There are other problems with what he says. He's for less population growth and sprawl in one paragraph and for more economic growth in the next. The two can probably be reconciled, but it's not an easy thing. Those who are most passionate about economic growth accept more immigration and sprawl than people who aren't, so the two groups come into conflict, as do libertarians and social conservatives.

Secesssion is an easy, feel-good answer for people who don't think about the consequences. Fortunately, all the talk is still mostly tongue-in-cheek.

X, if dividing means we do less overseas, I'm all for it. We need to bring our military home TODAY, use them to protect OUR BORDERS ONLY, and have the most powerful defense in the world.

I think it would be WONDERFUL if the blue states seceded from the Union...think of how much easier life would be for the REST OF US who live in the red states!

But would you take in all of us blue-state conservative refugees who'd be fleeing?!

We keep the Master's legacy with US!

The GOP dumped Reagan's legacy 16 years ago.

Well that's an honest answer, though a lot of people will disagree with you. The fellow who wrote the article seems convinced that we can split the country in half (or 60-40 or 70-30 or whatever) and still throw around the same amount of power in the world that we do now and maintain the same foreign committments that we've got now, and that's just fantasy.

The question for you, though is whether secession or fragmentation would make it easier to hold on to the things you believe in. For if America splits in half and half takes the European path, that way will come to be seen as the wave of the future and win converts, even in the more conservative of the two new American countries.

America, American values and the American way are more appealing and stronger because of our national unity. Lose that and we lose much.

We don't need our military scattered over the world to maintain our way of life. In fact, doing so will guarrantee that we will END our way of life.

George Washington advised that we have no strong allies, and make no enemies.

The US Constitution allows ONLY a standing navy. NO STANDING ARMY, or air force, etc. With no standing army, we CANNOT be a 'first strike' offensive force-- and the founding fathers KNEW THAT, and INTENDED IT THAT WAY! The Constitution only allows the president to raise the armies AFTER CONGRESS DECLARES WAR. You may remember (if you didn't go to the government schools) that this is precisely what happened in the War for Southern Independence. In 1860, the US Army was only about 25,000 people. After Ft. Sumter, Lincoln ASKED THE GOVERNORS of the States to provide 75,000 (at which point MORE states seceded), then 75,000 more. In the end, of course, Lincoln had the blood of over 600,000 Americans on his hands-- all compared to only 25,000 in the Army in 1860.

Think Switzerland. Only 1/2 the size of my State of SC, they survived and thrived through not one, but TWO WORLD WARS. Hitler refused to invade them, because their defense- which consisted of every able-bodied man being in the militia- was so strong.

Neutrality, and an AWESOME defense, will guarrantee our way of life. An empire will KILL it; just as it killed Rome and the UK.

I just read your article “Blue States Secession: One Southerner’s Perspective” from the Free Republic web site and, as a “liberal Yankee,” I was astonished to discover that you and I are in total agreement on the question of red/blue state succession. I think it’s a great idea for dozens of reasons of my own. It’s pretty clear that people from the north and south have very little in common when it comes to values and priorities (don’t worry, as a non-conservative I don’t feel compelled to lecture you on why I think mine are better and yours are all screwed up.) So yeah, you make a good case all your own about why the civil war should never have been fought. The north should have let the south keep your slaves and your own particular brand of slave-based “Capitalist Red economy” and “democracy.” So do me a favor, ok? Push the idea of succession from the north as hard in your neck of the woods as I plan to in mine. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll both be lucky enough to see it happen. Who knows, maybe this is the one topic that EVERYONE in the nation can agree on? Sincerely, AA
