Not getting enough oxygen. But the problem is in his lungs and this can only alleviate it some.

There's a thin line between health and illness at that age. I suspect they will have him on a respirator until they can control the infection. I wonder what state his immune system in in. For example, he could be developing a Guillian Barre Syndrome.

This is something similar in what my grandmother went through before she died. She had trouble breathing. They wanted to operate on her.. She said no..

i think his breathing is compromised for some reason. why they just don't say he's going on a respirator... instead of saying he's getting a trach...baffles me.
