Historians have pointed to landmark events of recent decades such as the fall of the Berlin wall, the toppling of the Saddam statue in Baghdad and the elections in Afghanistan and Iraq.
But some day, observers, in tracing the advance of liberty and the defeat of freedom's enemies, are likely to mark in red Monday, March 7th at approximately 7:12 AM ET. For that was the day and hour that Katie Couric of The Today Show had very positive things say about foreign policy of President George W. Bush.
The occasion was an interview with NM Governor and former Clinton admin UN Ambassador Bill Richardson. The initial focus was on the incident that took place in Baghdad on Friday. An Italian journalist who had been freed after having been taken hostage, and who was on her way to the airport, was wounded and an Italian intelligence agent killed, when they ran a US barricade.
Today opened the show with an item on the incident, and mentioned more than once the journalist's allegation that she might have been intentionally targeted by US troops, on the theory that the US was showing its disapproval of the tactics of the Italians in negotiating with the hostage takers.
Richardson, to his credit, rejected those allegations out of hand. While acknowledging that the incident put Italian President Berlusconi in a tough position, given the opposition of a majority of Italians to Italian military presence in Iraq, Richardson explained that the vehicle carrying the journalist had ignored hand signal, flashing lights and warning shots while racing through the US barricade at high speed.
Then it was on to a discussion of the pullout of Syrian troops from Lebanon. "How significant is this?" asked Katie.
Richardson: "Very significant. The Bush admin deserves credit for saying that foreign occupiers must go." He added that "in Lebanon, Egypt, and the Palestinian territories a wave of democracy, caused by young people calling for democracy, and by the Bush administration, is happening."
It was then that Katie made her historic declaration. Whereas normally she revels in citing experts, named or unnamed, to condemn the Bush administration, today she stated: "many foreign policy experts are hailing the Bush doctrine."
Richardson concurred, if somewhat grudgingly: "It is working, whether by design or accident. It is sparking a wave of democratic sentiment that might override Muslim fundamentalism and hatred for US and create a generation of young Arabs who view the US positively."
Katie ended the interview with this remarkable-for-her personal comment on developments: "Good news indeed."
Has the liberation of the MSM begun? It's way too early to claim victory, and future setbacks are virtually certain.
But the significance of Couric's acknowledgement this morning should not be underestimated. When even the most intransigent crtics of W's foreign policy not merely acknowledge its success but hail it as "good news," something important is happening.
Well, Katie got the remarks out without visibly crying or shaking!
Maybe we should break out banners, posters, etc.:
"Learn to Stop Worrying and Love the Bush Doctrine!"
No doubt on the clenched teeth scale Katie scored a 10. :^)
By design or ACCIDENT? They had to get that little word in though didn't they? Bush could not be successful on his own merits, it must all be an accident! They are so pathetic and pitiful.
Bill Richardson is just another opportunist Donk hack to me. But he did get a degree from the prestigious "Fletcher School of Diplomacy" at Tufts university http://fletcher.tufts.edu/
Flying pig, broken clock bump.
I doubt that Richardson wants to be connected to the klintons.
More likely is that Perky, always stalwart in her convictions,(apology for early morning sarcasm!) is merely bobbing along in the tide of other cowed critics of the Bush Doctrine. The Shoe Model isn't exactly famous as a leading thinker, although she is a terrific suckup and conniver, so maybe the fear of the fate of Dan Rather is having some effect.
Thanks for the interesting report, governsleastgovernsbest.
Katie is as ignorant today as she was yesterday...even a stopped clock is correct twice a day...although, Katie does not have near as good a record as a stopped clock.
I am going back to bed since apparently I have mistakenly awoken into some strange alternate dimension.
The Dimocrat policy couldn't be more clear.
Their words are changing, not their ideas.
They are finally realizing that the 800 pound gorilla that keeps jumping on their head needs feeding.
Hillary is a moderate, soon to be a conservative.
Joe Lieberman is a conservative, soon to be Atilla the Hun.
Nancy Pelosi will become Mother Theresa. (oh how I wish)
The Deaniac will soon fall from grace, or be muzzled, as will all the extreme kook groups.
They will yell for a wall to be built to stop the Apaches Mexicans from invading. etc. etc.
After it is all said and done, the Dims will be Right on the outside and Left on the inside.
Hey! ... wanna see my Chameleon?
Terrific headline! Thanks- you started my Monday off with a grin.
Katie reads from the John Kerry Doctrine: Whatever was, before whatever wasn't.
Black, right?
LOL!
Anyone know the temperature in Hell this morning? Weatherbug doesn't cover it.
LOL. Nicely done!
Golfer Sam Snead wrote in one of his books about an incident during a golf tournament. He drove the ball on one hole particularly well, and a spectactor called out, "Lucky shot."
Snead replied, "Yes, and the more I practice, the luckier I get." (This is all from my vague memory of reading this book more than 35 years ago; it's not a word-accurate quote, but it's probably close.)
That's like our President Bush. The more he does these things, the luckier he get. Ha!
Katie Couric: Only person with lower quality media industry ratings than Dan Rather!
