So would the perfect job be teaching English to Hispanic women?

I'm going to try to be very careful here

Are Hispanics the most sexually active of all minority groups? Or is there some other group which leads them?

America has many cultural sub-groups. When Hispanics become Americanized, do they become Preppy? Or listen to Dwight Yoakum? Perhaps they listen to urban Hip Hop music?

In short, what are the primary influences on Americanized Hispanics, what culture do they follow, and would that influence perhaps lead them on to more frequent sexual experiences?

Hispanic children who come to this country become immersed in a culture that is more permissive about sex, Smith said — chaperones are not uncommon on dates in Mexico.

It seems that the "Americanization" of Hispanic children has some health and social drawbacks that immigrant parents didn't realize when they came here for the "better life".

The only people who can say if it was worth it are those immigrants who made the sacrifices to get their children here.

I don't claim to have the answer but I would bet it has something to do with the way they conjugate their verbs.

My guess would be that Spanish-speaking immigrants are still immersed in their original culture, which is rooted in more traditional values. Primarily English speaking hispanics, on the other hand, have grown up in the sub-cultures that have developed around second and third generation children of immigrants. Many of those subcultures do not promote healthy world views and thus lead to the higher sexual activity.

Just a theory, anyway.

Look again.

It's talking about young girls - teens - is it not? The terms "children" and "adolescents" are used. Someone's daughter. Jr. High and High School.

The idea of teaching English to grown women is not relevant. By the time they are grown women, they have already either assimilated by learning English and other "norms", or they have continued in their Hispanic culture. There is a seeming divide there.

It is what it is, and these people are studying it.

Ah, reality; how sweet it is!

In the last couple of months I have gone out with 2 Latin women. Both in their mid-20's. One I met on my own and one I was set up with. In both cases, they waited until we were sitting down at dinner to let me know they had kids. And further, one told me she was CURRENTLY in a relationship, but that she was mad at the guy and hadn't talked to him in 3 whole days! The other one had gotten married when she was 17 and was divorced at 25. I have learned my lesson.

It may be as simple as this: It's hard to pick up a date or meet new friends if you don't speak the language. The less you can communicate, the smaller your options, and the more of an outcast a person would be.

Just a thought.

Hispanic teen sex puzzling

Hispanic teen sex is not the only thing that's puzzling.

My wife is Hispanic but not a teen, and as of lately I am puzzled as to why I have to continue to wine and dine her just to obtain sex, even after I married her?!

I think she might be playing this white fool!

I believe it has to do with the 'Hispanic culture' here in the US. It's more like the black culture than the Mexican or Central American culture. They've adopted the ghetto mentality, and in many cases are just not interested in education, and actively ridicule those who are. This attitude breeds hopelessness and a feeling of living for today, which will always increase sexual activity because they believe there's little else to live for.

"The key question — why? — remains unanswered."

Learning to speak English makes it easier to pick up white girls.

Yup, right up there with Pennicilin and a cure for cancer.

But seriously, I grew up in South Texas, many of my good friends were Hispanic. It was a strange paradox, one that I tried to talk to them about but could not get a straight answer. They were all Catholic, very devout in their practices. Always crossed themselves when passing the church, etc. They would not even contemplate the use of contraceptives or abortion. But, they were all having pre-marital sex like rabbits. Hence, many of the girls were pregnant at 16, and the guys would almost always marry them.

I would ask my friends why they followed all of these tennants of the Church, except that little one about not having sex out of wedlock, but I never got a good answer.

Well, Duh!

When you move to a new country, you can either keep the old ways or adopt the ways of your new country. If you keep the old ways, they will work as well as they always did to keep you healthy, happy, and help you prepare the next generation for a healthy, happy adulthood. If you adopt the ways of the new country, this will be, at best, an imperfect process. Therefore the ways of the new country that lead to happiness, health, and a well prepared younger generation will be imperfectly applied.

This is so obvious, it could only be surprising to an academic or a Social Worker.

No puzzle here.

We should all take our young daughters, learn Spanish, and jump the border heading south...

Our “culture problems” are lack of respect for parents, teachers or anyone of authority. Parents who encourage their children to ‘ape’ rock stars is dress which leads to the morality of those people. Take the actions of the young people who set the teacher up by refusing to stand during the National Anthem last week. The teacher gets it in the neck rather than the student (s) getting the punishment they so richly deserved…had that been a child of mine, he/she wouldn’t be able to sit down for a week! Our “cultural problems” stem from ads directed at the young encouraging them to look like tarts and pimps – the glorification of ‘sex’ in rap, soap operas, MTV, Hollywood and the disrespect of women in general along with several generations of badly mannered people ENCUDING the PARENTS…coupled with badly educated teachers from crippled colleges with questionable regents and staff.

Demand English only in school and demand respect for teachers no matter what...require a dress code that reflects respect for the person, teachers included.

There seems to be an easy answer for me. In the 3rd world countries of Latin America the money to buy the cigarettes, booze and drugs is not there for the average family, nor are the jobs there for teens to put the money together for the same. My experience as a kid here in the U.S.A., was in that order the next step is promiscuity.

Not that there aren't many exceptions to that trend, like good church going kids ending up getting pregnant without the benefit of partying, etc.

In the same manner, the convenience and extreme poor nourishment of fast food is not so prevalent in their native countries, as well as that the physical effort required to survive prevent a sedentary lifestyle.

…found that 31 percent of Hispanic teens who speak primarily English have had sex, more than twice the percentage of those who speak primarily Spanish, 14 percent.

The key question — why? — remains unanswered.

Doesn’t seem that strange. They can function in the Anglo, Hispanic and mixed subcultures. That widens their number of potential partners. While this would also be true of the bilingual teens, the bilingual group would be more likely to associate more with the Spanish speakers than with others and possibly more likely to be observant Catholics.

"The discovery of a single unifying intervention that could reduce or prevent some or all of these conditions would be hailed as one of the greatest accomplishments of modern medicine," he wrote.

Always looking for the simplistic. When I was a collage kid (BA in Sociology) I found – contrary to what the text books stated – there was seldom a single underlying cause for behavior.
