Schiavo in 48 hour window

By: Bill McGinty

Video Story

Supporters like the Rev. Patrick Mahoney of the
Christian Defense Coalition say they expect people to
try to enter the Woodside Hospice to “rescue” Terri
Schiavo if her feeding tube is removed. The Pinellas
Park Police has officers stationed in the parking lot
and inside the front doors of the hospice in case those
threats are attempted.

The Florida Legislature is now working on a bill that
Governor Bush says he will sign into law that would
prevent the removal of Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube.
The bill should be on the floor for debate by mid-
Friday.

Terri Schiavo has been in what doctors call a
persistent vegetative state since she collapsed from a
heart attack in 1990. Terri’s Schiavo’s husband Michael
Schiavo told a local newspaper that Terri would not
want to live this way and that the government should
stay out of family business.

(1) Governor Jeb Bush can, at any time, on legal authority as executive, order the Pinellas Park Police to prevent any removal of Schiavo's feeding tube. If Bush fails to do this, he should be removed from office.

The Florida Legislature is now working on a bill that Governor Bush says he will sign into law that would prevent the removal of Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube. The bill should be on the floor for debate by mid- Friday.

(2) If a judge "overturns" that law, and the Governor rejects the ruling, and the Legislature backs him up, then that is the FINAL say. All Americans need to remember that THE JUDICIARY IS NOT THE LAST WORD in our tri-partite system of government.

She has a "port" to her stomach through which nutrition is delivered. She has her meals via tube. Then the tube is removed after the meal is served.

This is how a nurse explained it to me.

The feeding tube (G-tube) is essentially a rubber hose that is sewn through the upper abdominal wall into the stomach or upper intestine. It is capped off (remaining intact) between the feedings. During feedings, the cap is removed, a large bulb syringe is used to verify placement, the bulb is then removed, and liquid nourishment is poured into the syringe, and allowed to drain in via gravity. A very, very simple procedure.

some else posted this on another thread:

When they attempted to starve Terri to death before, and Terri's siblings tried to have her fed orally, Florida's Judge Greer said: "I don't want anyone trying to feed that girl. The law of the case is that she is going to die."

IF she is able to swallow her saliva then she CAN swallow.

Terri does not drool and swallows her saliva.

Terri swallows her own saliva. Under the other Terri thread, Schiavo Case, there are affidavits from 3 nurses who have cared for Terri. They speak about giving Terri ice chips, juice, jello, etc. despite their orders to the contrary, and how much she enjoyed taking the food by mouth. There are links available (through Terri's page?) that a number of doctors believe that Terri could be fed by mouth, but Judge Greer has refused to allow tests. She last had "swallow tests" in 1992 or '93 BEFORE Michael received the malpractice settlement for her.

No prob Laz. Mahoney, who is named in the article is very savvy and will surely know how to handle what needs to be done, when that time comes.

Yep. But how many of our sheeple know that?

They have images implanted of a comatose body hooked up to wires and tubes, with monitors beeping away.

Hopefully, enough of the power on the not dark side "get it" and can do the "legal" thing to save her.

The G-Tube (G for Gastrointestinal) is a tube that goes directly into the stomach through the abdomen. My Dad had one. The most natural way is to give bolus feedings which is where the cap to the tube is opened and the liquid food is poured into a large syringe and directly into the stomach. A pump may also be used and the feeding is then spaced out over larger periods of time. The blous feeding is more akin to eating scheduled meals. My Dad preferred to get his food this way because as he always said, "Most people don't eat 12-24 hours a day!" (which is the way the pump is usually set up. A certain amount is given over a 24 hour period.)

The pump option is best for those who have trouble taking in more than 200mls of the food at a time due to absorption problems. This happened to my Dad in the last couple of weeks of his life. In all liklihood it was the body starting to "shut down" in preparation for death. This is a normal thing...I knew it and it freaked me out when I noticed that he wasn't absorbing the food at a good rate...

Anyway...I wonder how Terri Schiavo is fed. I wonder if she is on a pump or gets bolus feedings. I also wonder what her food absorption rate is if she is getting bolus feedings. I would venture to guess that it is pretty normal from all that I've learned of her case.

I think I'll write my Congressmen and Senators now...

As I said, Mrs don-o has all the details. I do know that Terri is not hooked up 24/7. And I do think that is the image that the sheeple have.

It depends. I'm not sure if the port is going to be removed, or just clamped off. And I don't know if this legislation would require the port to be reinserted if it's removed. If the port is merely clamped off, then feeding could resume without any trouble. If the port is removed, it would have to be surgically reimplanted before feeding could resume.

I'd like to think that the people who callously discuss her death like it's a right-to-die issue just aren't aware of the facts. I'd really like to believe that, and sometimes it's true, but deep down, I know it isn't always true. I've seen people on these threads who know she's alive, know she never requested death, and still they insist she should die.

I haven't followed the case of the Florida couple that was arrested not long ago for starving their kids. But I remember thinking at the time of their arrest, "They can't prosecute them. Florida just ruled that it's legal to starve a family member to death."

Yes, Terri swallows her own saliva. She doesn't require suctioning. At the time that her feeding tube was inserted for the convenience of the staff, she was swallowing food. Spoon feeding her was a long tedious process, so in keeping with common practice, a feeding tube was inserted.

Thanks!

I have much to learn on this case...I have only been following since very recently. I do know that there is something very rotton going on though. That is my gut instict. I saw Michael Schiavo on Nightline last night and he creeped me out. My instict was that he is lying and is hiding something.

Anyhow, what you described is Bolus feedings. It truly doesn't matter how she gets the feedings but bolus is more akin to a "normal" way of food intake - several meals a day rather than stretched out over a long time, as I said in my previos post. But, either way, IMO, it doesn't really matter in the sense that tube feeding is in NO WAY an "artificial" way of keeping her alive. It is the most practical and sensible way to be sure that she recieves the nutrition she needs. If her feeding tube is removed and she is not allowed to be fed orally, then she will starve - in other words those who remove the tube will be killing her.
