Terri's Slow-motion Torture Death

As this is written, the feeding tube of Terri Schiavo has been removed by order of Judge George Greer and, unless a federal court intervenes, she will die a painful death by starvation in a period ranging from four to 20 days. In all the discussion of this case it seems to me that its essential morality has been overlooked. The argument seems to rage about who has the final authority in sentencing her to death. Which legislature or court, state or federal? The husband or the family? This misses the central point: Should any political entity or any individual have the right to sentence a person in a "persistent vegetative state" to death?

We need to be clear. Removing the feeding tube from Terri is not "allowing nature to take its course" or "allowing her to die." If a man locks his daughter in a closet for two weeks and gives her no food or drink, he is causing her death. Nobody would speak of letting nature take it course but about homicide. We have here a court-ordered homicide. No governmental agency or private individual should have authority to impose a sentence of this sort on an innocent human being.

Excellent artcile and direct to the point.

At this point we can still pray and we can continue to be involved through emails, letters, faxes and activism.

This latest Federal Judge decision is another in a long line of aborations and corruption assiociated with Terri Shiavo. Where is it written down and notoriized...that her wishes are to die of starvation or thirst if in that position...which would violate her religious beliefs which, by all accounts, she was adamant about?

As to constitutionality of this decision, I say it's pure, unadulterated Bravo Sierra. This Judge could easily have ruled constitutionally that she had a right to life, which trumps all of the other legaleze and mumbo-jumbo being spouted by those who support having her killed.

Common sense has fled so many of our people, even our judges. When there is the least shred of evidence, doubt or disagreement in such a situation as this, particularly amongst direct family members who are willing to lovingly care for her...you ERR ON THE SIDE OF LIFE!

Anything short of this is an abject violation of the most fundamental principles upon which this Republic was founded.

We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are the right to life...

If we as a people cast that aside, if we allow it to be cast aside, then we tread a path that will lead to our ruin, our enslavement and our destruction as a soveriegn Republic and a nation founded upon liberty and the rule of law, that law being undergirded by fundamental moral principle.

Sadly, in this ruling and episode, as with many others of our day (ie. abortion) we are seeing exctly why Adams said this and are living out the negative of John Adams statement...right before our eyes. God bless those who are standing for life, against the culture of death. May we as a people have the fortitude and the willingness, if neccessary, to stand boldly and resoultely on these principles against such conditions of our day.

Death row inmates get better treatment...

Meals: Death Row inmates are served meals three times a day: at 5:00 am, from 10:30 am to 11:00 am and from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Food is prepared by prison staff and transported in insulated carts to the cells. Inmates are allowed plates and spoons to eat their meals. Prior to execution, an inmate may request a last meal. To avoid extravagance, the food to prepare the last meal must cost no more than $20 and must be purchased locally.

It is not painful. My mother starved herself to death rather than die more slowly, and much more painfully, from incurable throat cancer. She had medical advice in making the decision and medical care while dying in a hospice.

Republicans and right-to-lifers are exploiting private pain for political gain here. They are god-damned ghouls.

Absolute Horse-hockey! I worked in nursing facilities for years. Depriving anyone of food AN WATER is painful.

So true.

Can people not see where this is heading? In another 20 - 30 years there will be extreme societal pressure to get sick, elderly people off the government roles......i.e., Social Security, Medicare, etc.

The door is now being opened to kill them for financial reasons. All the same arguments will be used.

God help us.

Even accepting the dubious assertion that she wants (or wanted) to die, how is it moral, legal, ethical, or even possible that slow, painful starvation is the best way to do it???

I want to be sure that I understand your point: Because your mother experienced no pain from starving herself to death -- I am sorry for your loss -- Terri won't either and that makes it OK for the state to kill an otherwise healthy handicapped person. Oh -- and anyone who disagrees with you is a "ghoul".

The complete absence of logic and compassion in your thoughts is breathtaking.

I've heard that she won't die in pain at all...

1) Her brain is not functioning anymore. She won't know she's dying nor will she feel it.

2) Just to make sure, they're going to pump her full of morphine.
