Activist Claims School Censored Protest Against Homosexual Event

By Mary Rettig April 12, 2005

(AgapePress) - Members of a high school conservative group in California are saying their First Amendment rights were violated when they tried to protest an upcoming pro-homosexual "Day of Silence" event.

Tim Bueler, a senior at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, is the founder and president of the High School Conservative Clubs of America. Last week the Rancho Cotate High School Conservative Club participated in a demonstration called the "Day of Truth." The conservative protest was designed to counter a pro-homosexual observance known as the "Day of Silence," an event planned by the Gay-Straight Alliance and fashioned after a similar nationwide demonstration.

Over two days last week the Conservative Club members walked around Rohnert Park carrying signs bearing the message "Homosexuality is Sin" or citing scripture references against homosexuality. Many students wore pro-marriage messages on their sweatshirts and passed out pro-family literature as well.

The off-campus demonstration proceeded largely without incident. However, Bueler says the protesters were met with opposition when they tried to enter Rancho Cotate High School. "Our signs and our material were confiscated," he complains, alleging that school officials "confiscated all of our literature and our sweatshirts right when we got into class, and they cited material disruption."

The Conservative Club founder says he protested against the school officials' attempted censorship. The young activist recalls, "I asked our principal to look at the educational code under 'Religious Tolerance and Expression.' He wouldn't do that, but he confiscated our stuff just the same." Two members of the Conservative Club refused to take off their "Homosexuality is Sin" sweatshirts, and Bueler says they were suspended for the day as a result.

The leader of the conservative student group contends that the school administrators and teachers who tried to shut down the Day of Truth protest were actually demonstrating the intolerance that exists against biblical and conservative viewpoints. "They're just proving my point," he says.

"There's a liberal bias in public education," Bueler continues. "And not only that, but you have a day unto one group -- the Day of Silence, a pro-homosexual day supported by the school. And when any other group tries to demonstrate or have a day like they have, it's not tolerable."

The high school senior adds that his club is in contact with some Christian legal groups, who are going over the case to determine whether the students' First Amendment rights were violated.

School principal Mitchell Carter did not return calls requesting comments for this report. However, he was quoted in the local press as saying that the confiscated sweatshirts violated a school policy about messages on clothing "that represent bigotry and target particular protected classes" of students.

I know that's been the case, that's why I went on to say we should have been more forceful back in the 80's when all this "speech codes" crap started.

In today's world, Christians lose the homosexual argument every time when they ONLY use the religious rhetoric. I have watched them for years in TV debates, and the Christian side keeps repeating that homosexuality is a sin and not normal. They get crucified for being intolerant, ignorant, and "fringe", because they are arguing with secularists and unbelievers. What they say is true--the Bible does say it is an abomination. It also says these people will be destroyed by something whose seed of destructioin is in itself--I always thought this was AIDS.

Let some quote scriptures, but let others note that homosexuality has never done anything to further culture, nations,
family, or the practicing homosexual; it has done nothing for mankind. It HAS caused disease, promiscuity, discension, crime,
cultural decline, perversion of youth, and contributed to perversion of the language. It is historically a psychological problem. Any homosexual who has contributed to the human situation has done it in spite of being homosexual.

Lastly, and most importantly in this instance--because of the above mentioned problems to which homosexuality is a major contributor
it has NO BUSINESS being honored at schools.

The promotion and celebration of homosexual activity in public schools in and of itself targets traditional Christian believers who believe and have a right to believe that homosexual activity is sinful.

Ahh, so young and yet so wise.

I feel there still may be hope for the next generation.

In Upstate NY, teenagers use the word "gay" to describe anything weird, sickening, gross, or demented.
It's a good thing. The smart kids are getting it. They're not deceived.

Whatever you do, don't email the principal and tell him what you think.
mitchell_carter@crpusd.sonoma.edu

And do not call, fax or email Rancho Cotate High School described on this page: A dissenting student hounded for his views . Don't do it!

but isn't the campus the place for free expression and exchange of differing viewpoints?

Only for the viewpoints differing from the normal.

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

More on the Rohnert Park conservative students' protest against the "Day of Silence" pro-homosexual indoctrination and promotion day, authorized by government schools and OUR tax dollars.

(Why don't the homosexuals make EVERY day a "Day of Silence"?)

I think the students sue, big time. There are a lot of organizations that might take this on.

Let DirtyHarryY2K and me know if you want on/off this pinglist.

(Note to Time Bueler - did the pro-homosexual students have pro-homosexual messages on their shirts? And if so, were their shirts confiscated, or just yours? Let us know what happens!)

"Let a judge figure out if..."

These days? The judge will hang the protestors just for wearing a shirt with words on it!

With Lefties, I tend to use the argument that it is Darwinistically disadvantageous behavior, both for the individual and for society, and should be discouraged for that reason, not encouraged.

This tends to make smoke come out of their ears.

"I so hope they sue and cost that school board millions of dollars."

...and the school board has all sorts of money...OUR MONEY! Just fire the idiots, and put back the laws that protect us against the insidious evils of homosexuals. At the very least, I want them BACK IN THE CLOSET, rather than in my face, AND MY CHILDREN'S FACE! Maybe there will be a new salt pile...

hate speech legislations and other leftist mumbo jumbo has always had the effect of creating a group of people that were "more equal than others". Orwell is/was a genius beyond his time.

I agree it IS our money, I disagree on just firing, because:

A mere firing will NOT get the MSM attention like a huge lawsuit or award will -- we need the awareness and attention of the PUBLIC and their outrage for this to have the maximum 'chilling effect' on such Marxist antifreespeech thugs.

A few million dollars in a propaganda/PR battle of this size and importance is a drop in the bucket and in context, may be well spent American tax dollars.
