This stuff is way out of my field of knowledge. I'm surprised to learn that we have one less pair of chromosomes than the apes. I would have thought more pairs would be indicative of further evolutionary advancement.

Yeah, I think we lost the "hair all over" gene ...

"advancement" is not a term to be bandied about concerning genetics.

just because we dominate the world with our wits and hands does not mean that the molecular structure of our genes is any slicker than that of any other mammal.

Think of a taking a trip to the grocery store with a friend. If you come out with more bags than your friend, that doesn't necessarily mean you bought more groceries. Similarly having more chromosomes (analogous to more bags) doesn't necessarily imply having more genes (analogous to the groceries.) Of course, having said that, having more genes in a genome is also not necessarily required to have more complexity.

The very notion of "further evolutionary advancement" is not in alignment with God's design. The only metric which God applies to His species is survival. By that metric, we have a long way to go before approaching that of "superior" species such as cockroaches and snails.

The survival metric is not a straight line. Sometimes a specific feature is good for survival, sometimes it is not so good--a changing environment demands adaptabiliy to maximize survival. We are "evolutionarily advanced" only to the extent that we are adaptable to our changing environment.
