White House Fears GOP Senator Will Kill Bolton Nomination
Human Events Online ^ | April 18, 2005 | Chris Field

Hagel May Jump Ship on Bush's Pick for UN Ambassodor -- Human Events has learned that the White House has become increasingly nervous about the confirmation of John Bolton to be U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

As a new week begins on Capitol Hill, conservatives are beginning to worry that the Democrats' smear campaign against John Bolton might be working.

With the Senate Foreign Relations Committee set to vote on the nomination on Tuesday, Republicans now fear that they might not have the votes to get Bolton out of committee and onto the Senate floor.

Liberal GOP Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R.I.) has long been a question mark for the Senate leadership. Now Majority Leader Frist must add fellow presidential hopeful Sen. Chuck Hagel (R.-Neb.) to his list of possible turncoats.

Sources say that the White House is taking seriously reports that Hagel is considering a vote against the President's pick to represent the U.S. at the United Nations in committee.

The Los Angeles Times today reported that Hagel "suggested" he might oppose the Bolton nomination because he is "troubled" by the nominee's "method of operation" and that he is "concerned about a series of accusations questioning Bolton's temperament and wondered if he was the right man for the job."

Conservatives in Washington believe that, in effect, a vote against Bolton would put an end to any hopes for higher political office that Sen. Hagel may harbor. What he now says stands in stark contrast to his March 14 statement on the Bolton nomination just over a month ago:

As of this posting, Sen. Hagel's office had not yet responded to phone or email messages.

If he ran as a dem, he'd be reelected. Hell, these idiots here also elected Ben (bad hair) Nelson who was as bad a governor as John Kerry (not Kerrey) and he got a lot of repub support (not mine).

He might have beaten him, but that is tenuous. Besides, Tom is so hum-drum he would probably slide whichever way the wind blows him on any major issues. Osborne is considering a run for governor I think.

Wouldn't that be something--Have Osborne as Governor of Nebraska at the same time that J. C. Watts may be Governor of Oklahoma---

Wasn't Osborne coaching when J. C. was the quarterback at Oklahoma?

I couldn't agree more...I refuse to support RNC, there are some great ones, but overall they have moved way too far to the left and refuse to lead. They suck.

I also just called Hagel's office. They didn't even ask what state I live in. I asked if the story that Hagel may not support Bolton was true. She replied 'He hasn't made up his mind yet."

I asked her to urge Hadel to vote for Bolton because he's the best one to 'reform the UN and clean up the corruption".

She said she'd pass my comments along. Everyone needs to call.....use this FREE NUMBER: 1-877-762-8762>/font>

I suggest that these obstructionist republicans need to ponder their own nominations when their respective times come up.

LUG,

We're not talking about a SCOTUS nomination. This is simply the UN ambassador.

Is Bolton and more or less ideologogical than Andy (RIP) Young?

Hagel is grandstanding...wonder what he wants?

Senator Inhofe who heads the Committee that handles environmental matters called global warming Junk Science at our Oklahoma GOP Convention on Saturday morning -- Inhofe is Chairman of the Committee so McCain can take it and stuff -- in fact, in 2000, Sen Inhofe jumped in the race to support Pres Bush before the primaries were complete in order to counter McCain and his stance on Defense matters. Do not believe McCain or Hagel are too high on Inhofe's list of Senators! :) May be slightly higher than Hillary but not by much. Inhofe always has a Hillary joke and sometime real life that seem like jokes to tell on her.

I don't think it is necessary about ideology. It is about putting a guy up there who can game the system. The folks at the UN LOVED Andy Young. The world loved Andy Young. They loved him so much they even gave us the Olympics here in the ATL - largely because he was a player on the committee.

If some yahoo from Ghana won't do what Bolton wants, it really won't help much for Bolton to berate him or try to have him fired. What other clubs does he have in his bag?

So, if someone doesn't want Bolton to be UN Ambassador because they think he is an as@#%le who shouldn't be our "ambassador to the world," does that make them a "turncoat"?

great number, thanks.

I called and left a message since it was after business hours. The number you posted gives you the switchboard; just ask for Hagel's office and they politely connect you right away.

What is with Hagel anyway? IIRC Nebraska had the highest percent of votes for President Bush of any state in the last election. I don't think the people of Nebraska sent their Senator(R) up there at the same time for a second term to thwart him at every turn.

If the Senate screws up the Bolton nomination, the next UN Ambassador should be one of these dunking birds. All it will have to do will be continually tap the veto button at the security council.

On the back-swing, with its cloaca. (orifice of elimination and reproduction for those of you in Rio Lindo)

BTW, Senator, did we mention the latest round of Base Realignment and Closure work is starting soon?

You going to close Offutt AFB? It's pretty much the only thing left in Nebraska, and it's been downsized significantly during an earlier BRAC and it's main mission (SAC HQ) went away about a decade ago. (They do still have the 55th strategic recon wing, which is a very important mission, but one which could be moved... say to Kelly Field on Lackland AFB, or any other Texas base with a long enough runway I'm sure the two (R) senators from Texas would welcome the mission.
