A very feminine mid-western girl with "liberal" conservative ideals.

Do the math. Ratzinger is 78 he was born in 1927,which would have made him a teenager in the late thirties and early forties. You may have wet the bed at 14,we do not hold it against you now. Good God!!!!! Lighten up.

RE your reply to "Northguy"

Speaking as a Protestant with some experience of ecumenism, I'll say flatly that it's idiotic for Northguy to say that Ratzinger hates Protestants. Ratzinger single-handedly pulled the Lutheran-Catholic Declaration on Justification out of a tangle that threatened to stop it. Many Protestant theologians and church leaders count him friend.

He has probably thought as deeply about Christian unity as anyone in the world. Thing is, he is also utterly realistic about the difficulties posed by the doctrinal degeneration of churches like mine. I think he might do very creative and unexpected things ecumenically -- because he is also very, very smart.

Congratulations to all Catholic brothers and sisters. Congratulations, I think, to all Christians.

I hope Benedict XVI lives to be over 100 years old.

i understand they are stroking out over on DU

Add in the fact that Bolton will be confirmed as UN Ambassador today, and life is pretty darn good. :-)

Ya know, some days are just worth getting up for.

This is a great day!

I hope you are right. All these positions of high authority and power are real meat grinders.

WE GOT GERMAN DISCILPLINE!!!!...It's not always pretty, it's rarely "fun" and novel,

Yippee!! Suffering will be cool again! Instant gratification will be frowned upon!! All the poor nuns who ever rapped my knuckles or pulled my braids (and ya know what? I deserved it almost every time!) are dancin' in heaven. No more "if it feels good do it". Who knows, the diocese might even make my church put a figure of Christ on those slabs of wood behind the altar! Oh, wait, I'm getting carried away.

It's a good day to be a 3rd generation American of German descent. Please note: No hyphenation here.

Hmmm...there were several leading candidates...I don't know if this disproves 'go in a Pope and come out a Cardinal' or not...how strong a favorite does a candidate have to be?

I was rather young when JPI and JPII were elected...neither of them were on anybody's short list...

What is the nominative singular for Papam? Is it Papas or Papa?

There have been 100 popes in the last 6 centuries?...So the average reign is about 6 years?

Viva Papa Benedictus XVI...

If we are lucky, I suggest it will be a 12 year papacy.

I was thinking about 10 years .. but I like your thinking better

Is that his crucifix? I've never like that other one that the most recent previous popes had used.
