Senate Blocks Ag Worker Citizenship Plan
LA Times ^ | 4/19/05 | Mary Curtius

WASHINGTON — The Senate today blocked a measure that would have created a path to citizenship for an estimated 500,000 farmworkers and their families, dealing a setback to those who advocate legalization as the key to immigration reform.

The measure's supporters failed to secure the 60 votes needed to prevent a filibuster by opponents, ending the effort by Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) to attach the plan to an $80-billion emergency funding bill that mainly would pay for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Under the plan, any illegal farmworker who could demonstrate that he or she had worked in agriculture for at least 100 days in the 18-month period before Dec. 31, 2004 and meet certain other criteria would be eligible for temporary residency.

Once the worker obtained temporary residency, he or she would have to work another 360 days over at least the next three years and no more than six years to be eligible for permanent residency. The spouse and children of farmworkers who obtained permanent residency would also be eligible for permanent residency.

Opponents attacked the measure as a thinly disguised amnesty program that would only increase the flow of illegal immigration into this country, and said it was inappropriate to try to attach such a sweeping change to an emergency spending bill needed to supply troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The rejection of this illegal alien amnesty legislation is a victory for Americans and a setback for Mexico-merger supporters (including our handful of FR in-House Mexico-merger trolls).

I have looked at all the articles from Google news and don't see any of that mentioned.

I did notice several saying that, because of the vote(53 for), it is certain that further activity will take place. But everyone already knew this.

victories abound on the illegal alien front. When will the leadership in the White House realize they need to take a hard line on criminality?

Don't hold your breath.

Now let's keep those phone calls, faxes and e-mails going to the usual suspects, making them aware that their jobs are in peril if they vote for ANY kind of amnesty!

Specifically these are the ones who REALLY need to hear from us. Republicans who voted for AgJobs Shamnesty:

Burns (R-MT), Chafee (R-RI), Coleman (R-MN), Craig (R-ID), DeWine (R-OH), Domenici (R-NM), Hagel (R-NE), Lugar (R-IN), Martinez (R-FL), McCain (R-AZ), Smith (R-OR), Snowe (R-ME), Specter (R-PA), Voinovich (R-OH), Warner (R-VA

Mostly, it is the usual RINOs.

Well, perhaps the person that puts the Senate notes on the bottom of the screen was wrong---

I went back and looked on the video tape of todays session and I saw that note a couple of times during the vote on the Mikulski amendment---I too, was surprised because I had never seen that note before---ususally they just describe the underlying bill and what ever they are voting on at the time--

Oh, well, I will go as someone who knows a whole lot more than I do about these things---I'll be back!!!

They forgot to mention this:

And to make the most money possible from legalizing illegal aliens at the expense of the taxpayer.

I was replying to your good catch-I guess I should have been more clear. I can't identify with Dane's positions-I always come across his posts on immigration/border threads. I replied to Dane about his spin right after agreeing with you.

Domenici R-NM

He'll definitely be hearing from me tomorrow. He needs to come back home and live in NM for a while and see just how bad our state is now. We have 48% legal Mexicans. God only knows how many illegals we have.

On the news last night it was announced that ALL NM librarians are being taught Spanish so they can talk to those who only speak Spanish. Well...duh. I wonder if the illegals can read English? So, I suppose that all books are going to have to be written in Spanish too.

It is impossible for you or me to figure out what they are doing because they have so many ways to manipulate it.

If it is hot to go, you'll hear about it tomorrow.

According to Fair
Sen Larry Craig's Ag Jobs amnesty amendment did not get the 60 votes needed for cloture an was rejected by a vote of 53 to 45 against.
Senator Chambliss/Kyl amendment which also would have expanded the H02A agricultural guestworker program but would not have provided current illegal aliens with a path to citizenship was rejected by a vote of 21yeas-77nays

There still is nothing on the Mikulski-Gregg amendment , it needs 60 No votes on it too. If there are fewer than 60 votes for cloture, there is a strong sense that the amendment will be withdrawn an we will have won. NumbersUSa source.

The Mikulski amendment did get voted out of cloture, by a big margin...

Then the actual amendment passed by a vote of 94-6!!!

That's a phony poll Dane, I can cite you dozens of legitimate ones that aren't a push poll as that was and where the results are as different as night and day.

Phony polls like this are evidence of the behind the scene propaganda efforts that are underway to sell the American public on an Amnesty dressed up as a guest worker program. It's great news that Larry Craig's Shamnesty was set aside but the OBL, which extends into the highest ranks of the GOP, will not be denied.

Look for an out of blue mini-amnesty bill to come in under the radar sometime in the summer when a lot of people are on vacation. It’s just the way these compromised, off the reservation public servants work.

With what we pay our elected officials in salary and platinum plated benefits where congressmen are guaranteed millionaires after 2 terms and multimillionaires after 3, you’d think they would be on the side of the citizen taxpayers of this country.

I guess for all too many of them their motto is: enough is never enough.
