McClinotck Begins Luitenant Governor Campaign

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - State Sen. Tom McClintock, the rock-ribbed conservative who made headlines two years ago when he ignored his fellow Republicans' pleas to drop out of the race to replace Gov. Gray Davis and leave the field open for Arnold Schwarzenegger, is getting an early start in the 2006 race for lieutenant governor.

Campaigning in Orange County on Saturday, McClintock told members of the group Principles Over Politics that the job appeals to him because the lieutenant governor presides over the state Senate and is California's chief executive whenever the governor is out of state.

"It places the office in the position of being a great generator of reforms," McClintock said. He also defended Schwarzenegger against complaints that in recent weeks he has backed off efforts to overhaul the state's pension system and institute tighter budget controls after his proposals came under sharp criticism.

"We have to bear in mind that political battles aren't tidy affairs," he said.

McClintock and Schwarzenegger were at odds for a time in 2003 when the legislator became the only major Republican to refuse to drop out of the race to replace Davis if he was recalled after Schwarzenegger became the front-runner to replace him. The two put those differences aside last year when Schwarzenegger campaigned for McClintock's re-election to the state Senate.

McClintock is making his fourth campaign for statewide office, having lost the gubernatorial race in 2003 and two previous bids for state controller. First elected to the state Assembly in 1982 at age 26, he served there until 1992 and again from 1996 to 2000. First elected to the state Senate in 2000, term limits will prevent him from seeking another term there in 2008.

He is the first Republican to announce his candidacy lieutenant governor in 2006.

"the rock-ribbed conservative" What is that? Sounds like a condom. And how do they describe Liberals? Moderates.

Go Arnold, GO! Cause' McClintock needs Arnold's coattails to win in '06.

It's the other way around. I know for a fact that Arnold's people have been begging Tom to make it a team effort.

Well, he did throw in with the democrat's candidate in order to stop the reform movement of Arnold.

Careful, you are starting to sound like a fool. Arnold was the latecomer in all of this. Tom McClintock has been fighting for sanity in California Government for over three decades. He has stood on the same podium as Ronald Reagan in some of his campaigns.

This week I hear, Maria Schwarzenkennedy is calling the shots for Arnold.

Then, there was his behavior in the race for governor where he promised Issa he would leave the race rather than become a spoiler ...... Well, he lied.

No he didn't. What did he spoil? and when did he spoil it?

Who's to say Issa didn't lie or misunderstand?
The only one claiming this was Issa, a man with a less than stellar record.

Yeah, tell me about it. ClintonBeGone should focus on getting his own state straighten up since Michigan has a Canadian socialist as its Governor. I mean its just so amazing how non-Californians know so much about California and that they can have a negative connotation about a great conservative.

It begs me to wonder whether or not some of the FreePers who criticize McClintock, are conservatives at all?

It is only the RINO's, moderates, and the anti-McClintock Freepers in general that really don't want McClintock elected as Lt. Governor and rather have a very liberal Democrat named John Garamendi elected as the next Lt. Governor in California?

I know that there are some of you out there that don't like McClintock because he doesn't compromised with liberals in Sacramento like Arnold, so does that mean that the anti-McClintock crowd in this website are going to support and vote for a LIBERAL Democrat over McClintock next year?

>> LOL. Keep sipping that koolaid. <<

Yes, better to be a "realist" and know for a fact that the ONLY kind of "electable" Republican in California is one that supports abortion on demand, gun bans, gay "unions", envirowacko laws, and lots of spending "for the children". Better get rid of your unelectable SOS pretty quick.

Enjoy all your abortions, gay "partnerships" and illegal immigration California, it's all good now that people with "R"'s next to their name are in charge!

Man, I just can't believe that I missed the CRA convention in Pomona yesterday. What did Tom McClintock say during his great speech at the CRA Convention in Pomona?

I know that it would be breath-taking seeing his great speech and getting a chance to meet him in person. I met Tom McClintock more than 2 years ago during the Recall and yes, I got my picture taken with him during his campaign tour in Temecula. He's a great stateman and an articulate orator to talk to.

Good God! Talk about a guy who can't get off the public teet! I thought California had a 'three strikes and out' law? This will be his fouth loss.

This is proof that you have no interest in promoting conservative government.

You quite apparently the prefer endless borrowing, high taxes, rotten infrastructure, and regulatory strangulation that "moderate" Republicans have promulgated, regardless of the fiscal, environmental, and social damage they have instigated.

I guess our definition of conservative is different. My definition doesn't include some guy who's lost 4 statewide elections and has been in office since he was 26 years old.

As I said, a perfect time for him to retire from politics and join a thinktank.

This is a perfect time for you to retire from this forum and admit that Arnold has totally failed to live up to his billing. The bait feckless and switch tactics he has employed have done little but mire California in more debt than Gray Davis ever contemplated and promises even more.

He outperformed a RINO golden boy by a wide margin in the same election when outspent 5:1. Had he got a pittance of GOP support he would have won, but then, had the GOP supported its own conservatie candidates we wouldn't be having this discussion because Bill Simon would be governor.

"Bill Simon would be governor."

Bill Simon? Bill Simon was an absolutely vile and disgusting candidate. This is the the guy who supported gay rights? Gay adoptions? Civil Unions? Special rights for homosexuals? Is that your idea of conservative?

It was California that lost as a result.

Why don't you stick to fixing things in Michigan where you live? Or do you think things are so perfect up there that they don't require your full attention?

Liar.

Bill Simon did none of those things. It was Gerry Parsky who refused to release a dime of CAGOP funds to his campiagn and put the screws to Simons's campaign consultant, Sal Russo who put a mechanical signature on the Log Cabin letter without Simon's knowledge in order to pay the bills.

Now you are up to slander and disinformation. Keep at it.

Since when do you pay the bills by filling out a Log Cabin survey? You're embarrassing yourself. Go back to bed.

Since the guy at the CAGOP with signature authority over the $2 million raised by President Bush extorted it.

It's always someone else's fault, isn't it? No wonder your faction will continue to have its nose pressed against the glass, never to be let in.
