Cardinal Newman Society: Senator Clinton Not Welcome at Catholic College

MANASSAS, Va., April 26 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Sen. Hillary Clinton and others whose public positions run contrary to Catholic teaching have been invited to deliver commencement addresses and receive honorary degrees at Catholic colleges, despite the U.S. bishops' ban on such honors.

"We are blowing the whistle on any Catholic college that blatantly disrespects the bishops by defying their clear command and teaching," said Patrick J. Reilly, President of Cardinal Newman Society (CNS), a national organization dedicated to the renewal of Catholic identity at America's 220 Catholic colleges and universities. "After decades of scandal at secularizing colleges, last June the bishops drew a line in the sand. No college that deliberately crosses that line deserves the label ‘Catholic' or the support of the faithful—most especially monetary support."

Reilly will be a guest on FOX News' "The O'Reilly Factor" on Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST to discuss Marymount Manhattan College's plan to honor Clinton on May 20.

Clinton is a strident advocate of legalized abortion, speaking at gatherings of abortion-rights advocates and voting against a ban on partial-birth abortion. She also has advocated expanding embryonic stem cell research and has declared contraception "basic health care for women." During a January 2005 speech to New York State "family planning providers," in which Clinton was widely reported as softening her stance on abortion, Clinton in fact began by confirming her commitment to "fight to defend" Roe v.. Wade, which she called "a landmark decision that struck a blow for freedom and equality for women." She has since snubbed pro-life groups that tried to meet with her.

Other commencement speakers protested by CNS:

* White House journalist Helen Thomas at Cabrini College, Pennsylvania. In her columns, Thomas has supported legalized abortion and advocated embryonic stem cell research.

* Former New York Times reporter Peter Steinfels and former Commonweal editor Margaret O'Brien Steinfels at Le Moyne College, New York. Both have been outspoken about their dissent from Church teaching on contraception and women's ordination.

* Theologian Sr. Margaret Farley at Saint Xavier University, Chicago. Farley is an outspoken dissenter from Catholic teaching on embryonic stem cell research, sexual activity and homosexual "marriage."

* Former Washington Gov. Gary Locke at Seattle University. The abortion-rights advocate opposed legislation to ban partial-birth abortion and notify parents when girls seek abortions.

Where's all the NON-lesbian nuns nowadays???

We should assume that a Nun is chaste, unless she decides to self identify as being a lesbian, or unchaste. I have worked with Nuns, the majority were doing Gods work.

Congratulations from this Protestant. I'm glad to see my brothers and sisters in Christ standing up for truth.

In fact, I stopped giving to my alma mater, Holy Cross, a few years ago after they had pro-abort alum Chris Matthews give the commencement address. In fact, that event ripped the cover-up that some of the Jesuits in the administration there have been perpetrating -- like having a performance of The Vagina Monologes on campus during Holy Week a few years back.

The Catholic Church has the opportunity to show some teeth when it comes to its doctrine. It isn't a matter of whether or not I or anyone else agrees with the Church. It is a matter of the Catholic Church standing up for its teachings. For those who don't like its teachings, why then, they can go elsewhere. This idea of a few confused liberals changing church doctrine is almost laughable. The faithful are encouraged when discipline prevails, as in the case of Hitlery at Marymount (no-longer-catholic) College.
