Michelle Malkin: The Wonkette-ization of Laura Bush
Michelle Malkin ^ | May 3, 2005 | Michelle Malkin

Posted on 05/03/2005 2:10:11 PM PDT by EveningStar

Most of Mrs. Bush's humor at the correspondents' dinner was just right: Edgy but not over the edge. But I think the stripper and horse jokes were totally beneath her.

Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes, the conservative commentariat would be buzzing for the rest of the year about what a tasteless skank she is.

You said........SOME people who vote with us, object to this. Like that angry 74 year old evangelical grandmother who called into Michael Savage yesterday.

Excuse me, but NO evangelical 74 woman would EVER listen to Michael Savage..he's as crude as they come, so I think she must have been a liberal seminar caller.

Now, having said that, I WINCED at the Horse joke and when she said SHE was a desparate Housewife. I thought everything else was GREAT!

Our President will go down in history as The Horse Masturbator

Gee, a free and democratic Iraq, a free and democratic Afghanistan, no repeats of 9/11 since that day: sorry, I think in the grand scheme of things, this joke will dwindle into irrelevance. And those who are upset with the President's handling of things like immigration can make the very same argument.

thanks to his mouthy wife.

Like I said, the Internet encourages name calling. Someone else called her a whore, I guess now she's a mouthy whore.

Anyway, gotta take my son to a swim lesson. Take care, everyone.

Absolutely. I thought that it was a terrific political tool, easily and effectively disarming a room full of enemies. That's why the intensity of those opposed to it surprises me. I'm not sure why it bothers them so much.

There was a commercial running about a year or so ago that featured a city kid who was staying in the country. He poured himself a bowl of cereal and discovered that there was no milk. It ended with him heading out into the field with a pail, walking towards a bull while his hosts were grinning from the window. Same premise as the horse joke and quite funny, at least to me. If it was all that bad it seems the F.C.C would have pulled it. Or had it pulled, er...had it discontinued. When are we gonna pass out the burhkas and turbans anyhow? I think I wear a medium turban.

Our President will go down in history as The Horse Masturbator, thanks to his mouthy wife.

Only if you're writing that history. Most people won't care.

In the gutter. Why else would that make something out of nothing?

Your post reminded me that my dear hubby always used to say that I was "slightly to the right of Attila the Hun". LOL! Lately on FR, I seem to also fall into the great, unwashed "moderate" area of the conservative branch. Go figure.

She doesn't get the joke either. Bet she has never lived in the country or if she did, it was not for long or she would have heard that joke.

I think you're right about what you posted about the two different factions of the Republican party. I just never noticed it as much as I have in the last few months.

Exactly right! Humor also is presenting a sense of the ridiculous, and NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would think Laura Bush, Lynne Cheney, and the women on the Supreme Court were stuffing money down the g-strings of male strippers.

Was pretty out of character for her. The horse jokes weren't bad or out of line, but just out of character.

Partially because the jokes were written by a hack. Joke writing is very hard and the writer is not a true comedian.

LOL.

I need to just post my thoughts about it and move on rather than engage with those whose minds will never be changed and who wish to speak ill of the president and his wife.

Oh, come on, people. Et tu, Michelle?

I've got two words: LIGHTEN UP.

Some people might be a little put off by that, and I respect their sensibilities. But for the audience and the atmosphere, the jokes (remember, they were jokes) were not out of place.

Mrs. Bush didn't compromise her values and the President didn't lower himself to the level of humor of Don Imus (remember HIS 'humorous' speech a few years ago?).

People on our side need to watch their prudishness and holier-than-thou attitude. The fact of the matter is there are jokes you'd tell and laugh about with your colleagues and there are jokes you'd tell your Great-Grandma.

We're not all great-grandmas.

Worse are the "moderates" here and elsewhere who raise the straw man of Christian prudery to defend the indefensible. Irrespective of religious beliefs, societal norms have dictated that there should be a difference between a joke that a First Lady would tell in a public forum, and jokes that make the rounds of locker rooms and pool halls. The line that separate such things are also the lines that separate us from barbarism.

I didn't catch the jokes, and Michelle Malkin is not very specific, but I'm inclined to agree with her. Laura Bush has spent a great deal of time and effort helping her husband by acting like a lady in public. Telling off-color jokes spoils the brand name, to borrow an advertisers' phrase.

What does it gain? Next time any of those reporters has a chance to stab the President or the First Lady in the back, he will certainly take it. None of them will act any better for laughing at these jokes. But they may well lose some edge with the Evangelicals and others. And for what?
