But the point is that if oil could be made for $15 a barrel, no one would pay $50 for it pumped out of the ground.

After the government entities add their combined taxes the $15/barrel puts it way above the world market price.

Really HUGE "NIMBY" problem. But when the odor emission "opportunity" is converted into an additional stream of products (think "ambergris" and its relation to perfume), this objection should be greatly diminished. Even the most "nasty" odoriferous compounds have some industrial use, as a feedstock for other products, a great many of which manage to make their way into cosmetic applications. Most of the more disagreeable stenches are sulfurous compounds known as mercaptans, sulfur analogues of alcohols, and are highly mindful of skunk oil. Other products, such as alkyl sulfides (dead cat smell) and various aldehydes or ketones, have a high degree of volitility, and escape from the system rather easily if there is the least compromise in the pressure lines.

"We will be able to make oil for $8 to $12 a barrel,"

But you will sell it at the same market prices!

It's good to know that old fashioned American ingenuity still exists. Great article!

Exactly, especially if you offered it for $49. Unless of course that whole "profit" thing didn't matter :)

I hate to point out the obvious . . . but if oil sells for $50 a barrel, these guys can make it for $15, why not patent the process and just sell it for $49 a barrel. That one dollar differences is BILLIONS in profit.

One problem is where to get 600 million tons of turkey guts. Thee aren't that many turkeys.

If you add an occasional spotted owl, the knocks and pings will go away.

Ahem...

4 billion barrels at 55 gallons/barrel * 8 lbs per gallon = 880 million tons.

Uhhh. 8 Lb per gallon is about right for water.
You might recall that oil is lighter than water.

Technological savvy could turn 600 million tons of turkey guts and other waste into 4 billion barrels of light Texas crude each year

A barrel of light Texas crude weighs 384 lbs (source). 4 billion barrels weighs 768 million tons. How are they going to turn 600 million tons of some stuff into 768 million tons of some other stuff? Where does the extra 168 million tons come from? And furthermore, the stuff they start with is mostly water, and the other stuff they end up with has essentially no water. Where does the water go, and how do they make up the deficit?

But there certainly is that much sewage discharge, and solid waste now going into landfills. Add to that agricultural wastes from other sources, and we could have a glut of petroleum of various grades that wouild cause the shutdown of practically every operating oil well in the world.

Looking at the bigger picture, countries that are now poor in petroleum, and are bidding on the world market for this resource, such as China or India, could adopt the technology and get themselves a twofer answer

Not so good for most of the Middle East, in the short run. But then, if you ever need sand....

I read about a chicken farmer in the Southeast US. He started raising crocs or gators to dispose of leftover chicken parts.

The added benefits are selling both the meat and relatively blemish free hides.
