Ex-Star: Ky. Discouraged Interracial Dating

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Former University of Kentucky basketball star Rex Chapman says school officials tried to stop him from dating black women, and asked him to at least hide the relationships to keep from inflaming fans.

"There were certain aspects of my time there that were really ugly," Chapman, who is white, said in a story published by The Courier-Journal on Monday. "I don't know how it is today, but that's how it was 20 years ago."

Chapman said scrutiny of his private life by athletic department officials, boosters and others hastened his departure from Kentucky. He left after two seasons and entered the NBA draft in 1988.

"People were bothered by the fact that sometimes I dated black girls" he told the newspaper. "Most preferred that I keep it confidential and hide it." He said he wouldn't name names, but was talked to about it "at least a half-dozen times or more."

Shaq won the MVP only twice in his career. Why does it have to be racism now?

What does Shaq have to do with Kentucky?

Rex Chapman was always unhappy at UK. I don't doubt that a few eyebrows were raised when/if he dated someone of another race. That would be naive to believe that those things never occur. I don't know, however, that I believe officials told Chapman not to date inter racially. Believe it or not, as crazy as we Wildcat fans can be, we usually don't follow the dating/social lives of our players until it gets them in trouble. Sounds like Chapman has sour grapes with someone, especially to wait this long to begin complaining.

Hey..a few years earlier than this, in the NCAA final, the Texan Western team treated the entire UK basketball team like their "bitches"..

I would think K-Y would encourage interracial dating.

(Oh....Kentucky. Nevermind.)

Well, since you asked. . . .nothing really. Shaq played in the SEC with UK in college...but that is about it.

Other than. . .
I will show my true blue colors here. When Shaq was a sophomore at LSU, UK played LSU at LSU and Shaq elbowed a UK player in the face (Dale Brown) and the refs called a technical foul on Dale Brown. UK went on to win, but I still hold a grudge. ;)

It's time for Chapman to sober up from his decades-long drunk. GEEZ.

I think that the author realized that he/she had written an article about racism negatively effecting a white guy (to the point that he needed to move to another state), and had to do something to steer it back to where it was about a black guy losing something. Just more PC junk.

That's not true - how do you think they feel about two people who both strongly oppose sex before marriage dating each other? :)

I don't see what the problem is. If Chapman wants to date black women, let him, since black guys won't.

No surprises here, I mean what with the stance of black women so very vocal when their men date white women. Of course, that is not racism... it can't be.

A nurse walks into a patients room..early one morning and ask's the patient what she wants for breakfast.

The patient replies: "I'll have bacon and eggs...and two pieces of toast with some of that Kentucky jelly."

the nurse says, "Okay...bacon and eggs, toast...but we don't have any Kentucky jelly. What is that?"

The patient explains...."Sure you do...I got it yesterday with my toast. It said, KY jelly right on the little container".

Don't know why it didn't post what I wrote.
I said, "I meant to say Shaq played at LSU, which is in the SEC with UK."
Thanks for the correction!

And, this is coming up over the NBA MVP voting? What? This is coming up because there is grumbling about the selection of Steve Nash over Shaq for the MVP?

Look, I'm a Miami Heat fan, I'm very excited that Shaq is playing for Miami and despite his injuries is leading his team into the Playoffs, hopefully the Championship.

But, an MVP is "most valuable player" and is typically defined by the player who does the most for his team, or is "most valuable" to his team.

The MVP voting this year is fairly simple. When Steve Nash played for Phoenix, they won; when he didn't play, they lost. Moreso than any other player in the league, Nash was the most valuable member of his team. Shaq was (not much, but) less so. Period. End of story.

The emergence of Heat guard Dwayne Wade and the possibility of him being considered MVP in his own right, may have diluted how important Shaq has been for the Heat. I have no doubt that Shaq has helped the Heat get to where they are today. And I also have no doubt that Shaq was THE HUGE reason why Dwayne Wade became a star this year (just look at Kobe once Shaq left...not near as good).

But, that's how things work sometimes.

But, when he didn't play, his team still won some games. Nash's team was much less successful without his presence.

So, Rex Chapman --director of basketball for the Phoenix Suns-- is defending the choice of Steve Nash (a white dude who plays for the same Phoenix Suns) over Shaq (a black dude who plays for a different team) by saying there was overt (or covert) racism at the University of Kentucky 20 years ago?

Huh? I'm not sure what's more baffling...the fact that Rex Chapman is talking about who he dated 15-20 years ago or the fact that he is only fueling the grumbling of one of his own players?

Doesn't seem that Rex Chapman is the sharpest knife in the drawer, that's for sure.
