For someone who is in love and recently married, a wedge of “very odd pain” is lodged in Mpho Tutu van Furth’s heart. It is caused by the South African Anglican church’s refusal to allow the daughter of one of the world’s best known Christian leaders to continue to work as a priest after she married the person with whom she has pledged to share the rest of her life: a woman. “It was hard for me to give up my [priest’s] licence, it felt incredibly sad,” Tutu van Furth – whose father, Desmond Tutu, won the Nobel peace prize...

Full disclosure: I have a daughter-in-law who has a Black father and three grandchildren who have a Black grandfather. I notice on the few commercials that show an interracial couple it is, without exception, a Black man and a White woman. It is never the reverse of that. I understand that it is much more common for a Black male to marry a White female than the reverse and I don't care who marries who, (as long a they are of two, separate genders), but why is this?

If you’re a 20-year-old black male, you can beat an 85-year-old white woman to death and pummel her 90-year-old white husband straight into ICU, and it won’t make the national news. Yep. Tyrone Woodfork, a black male who -- much like Trayvon Martin -- looks like Obama’s son, allegedly killed Nancy Strait and broke her husband Bob’s jaw, several ribs and shot him in the face with a BB gun last month in Tulsa. 20-year-old Tyrone also raped the nearly blind 97-pound Mrs. Strait, a great-great-grandmother, before he murdered her. TULSA — Several members of the Tulsa chapter of the NAACP gathered at a north Tulsa church Friday evening for an emergency meeting to discuss what police have characterized as a possible "shooting spree" that targeted five people early Friday morning. As news spread that the police are looking for a white man in connection with the shootings of five black people, people began saying they believe the shootings were racially motivated. TULSA - Community leaders in North Tulsa are calling Friday morning's shooting spree a hate crime. The shooting spree left three people dead and two others seriously wounded. Police believe the victims were targeted at random. Authorities are focused on finding a white man driving a white pickup truck, who was seen in the area at the time of the shootings. SANFORD, Florida (CNN) - A forensic audio expert who analyzed 911 recordings disagrees with speculation that George Zimmerman uttered a racial slur moments before shooting Trayvon Martin to death. What the neighborhood watch volunteer whispered as he followed the teen leading up to the deadly confrontation could weigh into the decision about charges against Zimmerman. The garbled word that raised controversy was "punks," not "coons," said Tom Owen, chairman emeritus of the American Board of Recorded Evidence. When Owen used a computer application to remove cell phone interference, the word became clearer, he said. After discussions with linguists, he became...

Over the past week, I had conversations with two long-time friends who are interracially married, over the ongoing controversy over gay marriage in Massachussetts and San Francisco. One is a next door neighbor in Louisiana, who is a white man married to a Vietnamese woman. The other is a black man from Seattle whom I have known since college, and he is married to a white woman from Alabama, and they are now living in Salt Lake City, Utah (we talked over the phone). Both men are very conservative Christians and very pro-family, and they feel deeply insulted when they...

The poison-pen racist who sent "sick" hate mail to actors Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel targeted dozens of other prominent interracial couples - including Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, the Daily News has learned. The FBI is investigating more than 70 threats mailed to jurists, entertainers, business leaders and athletes - as well as ordinary people - over the past three years, sources said. Investigators believe the letters sent to Diggs and Menzel in late November are the work of the same hatemonger who targeted Thomas, Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor and tennis star James Blake's...

Threatening letters critical of the interracial marriage between a Tony Award-winning white actress in the Broadway smash "Wicked" and Taye Diggs, a popular black film and TV actor, have sparked a NYPD probe and an increase in security at the famed Gershwin Theatre, sources said. One of the letters "threatens bodily harm to Taye Diggs," according to a police source. That letter was received Wednesday by Jed Bernstein, president of the League of American Theaters and Producers, the industry's major trade group, with offices on West 47th Street. Sources said that before Wednesday, two other handwritten letters were sent to...

January 16, 2005 Deuteronomy 7:3-4 & Colossians 3:9-11My aim today is to argue from Scripture and experience that interracial marriage is not only permitted by God but is a positive good in our day. That is, it is not just to be tolerated, but celebrated. This is extremely controversial since it is opposed by people from all sides.Interracial marriage was against the law in 16 states in 1967 when the Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court Decision struck down those laws. That is very fresh historically. I was a senior in college. Laws reflect deep convictions, and convictions don’t usually change...

Casting Will Smith's love interest in the big screen comedy 'Hitch' appears to be not a simple black or white decision.Cuban-American actress Eva Mendes was given the role opposite Smith because moviemakers were worried about the public's reaction if the part was given to a white or African American actress according to Smith. The actor said that is was feared that a black couple would have put off world wide audiences and an interracial combo would have offended viewers in the United States.'There's sort of an accepted myth thatif you have two black actors, a male and a female in the...

December 5, 2004 -- A letter-writing racist mailed a hate-filled death threat to actor Taye Diggs, threatening "burn" and "castrate" the African-American actor because of his interracial marriage to Broadway star Idina Menzel, police sources said. In addition to the malicious missive sent to Diggs, the writer has also penned at least two noxious notes making "negative remarks" about Menzel and her marriage — and threatening to burn down the Gershwin Theatre, where she stars in the musical "Wicked." The details of the Diggs threat, which was sent to Broadway honcho Jed Bernstein, were not released.

Isaiah Taylor has been a naturally curious kid for all of his nine years. His mom, Cindy, has always been quick to give an answer, or to find someone else who has one. When he was 4, his mother recalls, Isaiah wondered if black people could be superheroes, particularly because none of the action figures and toys he had looked like him. The two went out, did research and found some comic book characters and G.I. Joes who could be heroes for the young boy. Now that he's growing older, his questions about race, culture and who he is are...

Shaunti Feldhahn, a right-leaning columnist, writes the commentary this week and Diane Glass, a left-leaning columnist, responds SHAUNTI FELDHAHN for As a kid, I never realized there was a bias against interracial dating -- or that any serious racial bias still existed. Like most kids in the Washington, D.C.-area melting pot, I grew up around everyone from the children of African diplomats to kids who came over on the boats from Cambodia. My classmates spoke every language and lived in everything from luxury lake homes to public housing. Our dinner guests were just as likely to be from Nigeria...

The issue of gay marriage can trace its roots to the same argument used to strike down the ban against interracial marriages, which was also based on the idea of a union between consenting adults.

If interracial marriages are allowed between consenting adults, then why are gays discriminated against simply because of the so-called open minded consent between adults to join together in matrimonial union? But let's think this through one more step.

Hiding Racial Bias Can Tax Brain Encounter with 'different' people can drain mental skills, study suggests By Amanda Gardner HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, Nov. 26 (HealthDayNews) -- Harboring even a subtle bias toward people of another race can drain your mental function. The bias being spoken of here, however, shouldn't be equated with outright prejudice. An initial encounter with anyone who is "different," be it a physical disability or a racial difference, can be tense, new research says. "On the first meeting, it can be awkward. After a while it goes away, you let your guard down and engage more...
