Pepsi president likens U.S. to middle finger (Food giant now doing damage control in wake of speech)
WorldNetDaily ^ | May 20, 2005 | Joe Kovacs

The remarks by Indra Nooyi, an India-born woman who also serves as PepsiCo's chief financial officer, came during a speech Sunday to graduates at Columbia Business School. Nooyi then went on to say the five major continents in the world can each be represented by a finger on the hand. She said Africa was the pinkie; She said our thumb is Asia; Europe was compared to the index finger; South America, including Latin America, was likened to the ring finger; She said her analogy "leaves the long, middle finger for North America, and in particular, the United States.

Pepsico can afford to get a new CFO much more than they can afford having people pissed off at them.

I say, let's give the middle finger salute to Pepsico until they take the appropriate action. I am sure Pepsico is pouring over her contract right now to see if this speech gives them grounds for voiding the agreement and the golden parachute it is certain to contain. Let's give them a little incentive.

Pepsi, Frito Lay, Tropicana, Quaker and Gatorade brands.

How hard is it to pass these by in the store? Maybe give them a little middle finger salute as you go. These companies are extremely competitive, and will notice any decline in sales within a few weeks, if not days.

PepsiCola may (should) be looking for a new chief financial officer.

Are you that perfect that you have never mis-spoke?

I'm sure that it sounded funny on paper (and it really does), but in the delivery, it sucks.

She very quickly apologized for the error. Compare that to Newsweak (SP intentional), or, for Gods sake, JANE FONDA!!!

Moon pies are still available around here. I get one occasionally myself.

Yeah. I've been following this story and it just amazes me how these ignorami become CEOs of major corporations.

More evidence of The Peter Principle perhaps.

Advice to PepsiCo: Convene your board of directors and hold a vote of no confidence or whatever the protocol is and fire her. No severence, nothing. Just bye. Evidently she ain't a "team player". The sooner you are rid of her, the better. Your stockholders will thank you.

I hate all this PC censorship and insistance that honest people grovel and apologize. I particularily hate the fact that my children learned in college that certain subjects cannot even be mentioned, especially religion.

Hey, there is no comparison. Newsweek and Jane Fonda are a hundred times worse. But you don't see me rushing out to the news-stand to buy Newsweek and I would not be caught dead at Jane Fonda's new movie. Those kind of go without saying. I haven't patronized either for the last ten years.

But Pepsico is a different matter. They are a company in a highly competetive marketplace, and they spend a lot of money to generate good feelings about their company and their products. Then an officer of the company uses the authority lent by this hard fought success of the company to thumb her nose at this country. Would anybody care what this woman said if she were not the CFO of Pepsico? If that is their attitude, then I say that negates all that hard work, and we'll set the goodwill meter back to zero and work our way up from there.

As a customer, I now associate Pepsico products with these vile statements. This association makes it less likely that I will enjoy Pepsico products or have warm fuzzy feelings about them. Given that I will not enjoy them, I am much less inclined to buy them.

The list of brands was just my helpful nature, so that other FReepers know what products they may be annoyed at, if they are so annoyed.

The rest of the world is in awe of our country, they wish they could be like us. How ironic is it that these acient societies around the world, in Europe and Asia in particular, have all been overtaken economically (many times over) by a country created by immigrants, misfits, and cast outs, who've only been at it for a little over 200 years? Take that you ingrates!

I can see how people in the audience would think she is "giving the middle finger to America", and thats enough to make you want to tell her to take a flying leap.

But If I'm Columbia University, I have to be thinking "Geez lady, is this all you got? You rose to these heights in business and your giving us an upgraded version of 'This little piggy went to market'"?

Sort-of. She apologized, not for she said, but for offending people.

... we Americans are the rejects of the rest of the world. None of us put up with the cr*p going on where we came from.
I've always said, if the rest of the world was so great, there wouldn't be an America.
There isn't anything I wouldn't give to meet my ancestors who had the gonads
to give some tyrant the "middle finger" and sail to America.

Aye, there's the rub. Most of the world is in awe of us and wish they could have what we have, without adopting the reforms (religious tolerance, free-market economies, representative democracy, emancipation of women and abolishing caste privileges, etc.) that make our success possible.
