DeWine says dad was wrong about judicial filibusters
Cincinatti Enquirer ^ | 5/27/05 | Howard Wilkinson

In an effort to make sure the "sin'' of the father isn't visited on the son, Republican candidate Pat DeWine made it clear Thursday he doesn't approve of the role his father, Sen. Mike DeWine, played this week in brokering a deal with Senate Democrats over judicial filibusters.

"I wouldn't have voted the way he did,'' the Hamilton County commissioner said Thursday. "If a person is appointed to the federal bench, he or she deserves an up-or-down vote.''

The elder DeWine was one of seven Senate Republican moderates who came together this week with seven Senate Democrats to hammer out a deal that allowed some of President Bush's judicial nominees to be confirmed but gave Democrats the power to block others.

Many conservative Republicans are furious at Sen. DeWine; and, on Thursday, the Hill, a Capitol Hill newspaper, speculated that conservative voters in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District might take their frustration out on the younger DeWine, who is generally considered the front-runner in a field of 11 GOP candidates running in the June 14 special election primary.

There was some evidence other candidates for the 2nd District GOP nomination were ready and willing to try to tie Pat DeWine to his father's actions.

"He seems to have no problems riding his father's coattails when it comes to raising money and getting name recognition; he's willing to take all the good from it and none of the bad,'' said GOP candidate Tom Brinkman Jr. of Mount Lookout. "I don't know if I believe him when he says he wouldn't have done what his father did.''

I got endorsed! So did I!

With a surplus of anti-abortion candidates in the 16-candidate field, Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati's list of endorsed candidates continues to grow.

Right to Life's political action committee endorsed the organization's president, Jean Schmidt, and Brinkman weeks ago, but on Wednesday, the PAC added former 6th District Congressman Bob McEwen to the list.

Paula Westwood, Right to Life's executive director, said 13 of the 16 Republican and Democratic candidates responded to the PAC's seven-question candidate survey and "they are all pro-life. It's a very good field for us.'' The only candidates who did not respond were Democrats Paul Hackett and Victoria Wells Wulsin and Republican Peter Fossett.

Fifteen PAC members studied the surveys and voted on the endorsements, based on the responses and "their own personal knowledge'' of the candidates.

McEwen was added later, Westwood said, "because the PAC wanted to acknowledge his solid pro-life record when he was in Congress.''

The candidates' survey responses can be found on the organization's Web site, www.cincinnatirighttolife.org.

Dobson focuses on McEwen

McEwen's campaign got another boost this week when it began running a radio ad featuring Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family and one of the most influential voices in the Christian conservative movement.

On the 30-second radio spot, Dobson said McEwen is "fighting for Southern Ohio values'' and is "guided by his strong Christian faith.''

"The turnout will be low and the election will be decided by a few votes, so your vote will make a huge difference,'' Dobson said.

At the end of the spot, Dobson made a final point: "I am speaking only for myself, and not the organization I represent.''

When I read this article this morning, I almost spewed my coffee. Pat DeWine is running scared and covering his @$$. He is saying what he thinks he has to say to win. I still say he is a low-life, dirty politician snake, and I would never vote for him. The DeWines are turning into the Kennedys of Ohio. As for McEwen, he is a carpetbagger, ala Her Heinousness. He and his wife just moved back to the Cincinnati area from out of state just in time for him to run for Portman's office. I guess he was a politico from here at one time, but he and his wife moved out of state a long time ago. I am voting for either Schmidt or Brinkman. Haven't decided.

I saw a report on Fox last night which said that the President and/or Frist were afraid they didn't have the votes to go nuclear so they "sent conservatives Graham and DeWine to cut the best deal they could."

No, I don't believe it. But it does seem like a good way to soften the fall for these two.

That's basically the response Brinkman predicted on last night's Hewitt show that DeWine would give. DeWine wants to link with his father for name id, money, and endorsements, but as soon as daddy does something unpopular he wants to be seen as his own man. We're not buying it.

Schmidt voted to raise Ohio's Sales Tax by 20%. Brinkman voted against it.

Schmidt voted to raise Ohio's Gas Tax by 6 cents/gallon. Apparently she thinks gas prices are too low. Brinkman voted against it.

If you believe in higher taxes, Schmidt is your candidate. If you want to see lower taxes, Brinkman should get your vote. He has a perfect record of opposing all tax increases.

Well, junior, you'd better tell you Dad to change his mind and broker another deal to get an up or down vote on all these judges SOON or both of you will be looking for new occupations.

Brinkman is the best way to send a message to DeWine.

McEwen was a Congressman with Daddy DeWine. He and the Senator will collaborate.

Schmidt, as C_ stated earlier, has voted for tax increases.

Tom Brinkman opposed Pat DeWine when he (Brinkman) ran for his state rep seat and Pat backed the establishment candidate. Tom also ran a ballot initative to overturn a Charter amendment about police hiring practices that DeWine had backed forcefully.

If you want to send DeWine a message, vote Brinkman: www.gobrinkman.com
