DeWine says dad was wrong about judicial filibusters

In an effort to make sure the "sin'' of the father isn't visited on the son, Republican candidate Pat DeWine made it clear Thursday he doesn't approve of the role his father, Sen. Mike DeWine, played this week in brokering a deal with Senate Democrats over judicial filibusters.

"I wouldn't have voted the way he did,'' the Hamilton County commissioner said Thursday. "If a person is appointed to the federal bench, he or she deserves an up-or-down vote.''

The elder DeWine was one of seven Senate Republican moderates who came together this week with seven Senate Democrats to hammer out a deal that allowed some of President Bush's judicial nominees to be confirmed but gave Democrats the power to block others.

Many conservative Republicans are furious at Sen. DeWine; and, on Thursday, the Hill, a Capitol Hill newspaper, speculated that conservative voters in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District might take their frustration out on the younger DeWine, who is generally considered the front-runner in a field of 11 GOP candidates running in the June 14 special election primary.

There was some evidence other candidates for the 2nd District GOP nomination were ready and willing to try to tie Pat DeWine to his father's actions.

"He seems to have no problems riding his father's coattails when it comes to raising money and getting name recognition; he's willing to take all the good from it and none of the bad,'' said GOP candidate Tom Brinkman Jr. of Mount Lookout. "I don't know if I believe him when he says he wouldn't have done what his father did.''

I got endorsed! So did I!

With a surplus of anti-abortion candidates in the 16-candidate field, Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati's list of endorsed candidates continues to grow.

Right to Life's political action committee endorsed the organization's president, Jean Schmidt, and Brinkman weeks ago, but on Wednesday, the PAC added former 6th District Congressman Bob McEwen to the list.

Paula Westwood, Right to Life's executive director, said 13 of the 16 Republican and Democratic candidates responded to the PAC's seven-question candidate survey and "they are all pro-life. It's a very good field for us.'' The only candidates who did not respond were Democrats Paul Hackett and Victoria Wells Wulsin and Republican Peter Fossett.

Fifteen PAC members studied the surveys and voted on the endorsements, based on the responses and "their own personal knowledge'' of the candidates.

McEwen was added later, Westwood said, "because the PAC wanted to acknowledge his solid pro-life record when he was in Congress.''

The candidates' survey responses can be found on the organization's Web site, www.cincinnatirighttolife.org.

Dobson focuses on McEwen

McEwen's campaign got another boost this week when it began running a radio ad featuring Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family and one of the most influential voices in the Christian conservative movement.

On the 30-second radio spot, Dobson said McEwen is "fighting for Southern Ohio values'' and is "guided by his strong Christian faith.''

"The turnout will be low and the election will be decided by a few votes, so your vote will make a huge difference,'' Dobson said.

At the end of the spot, Dobson made a final point: "I am speaking only for myself, and not the organization I represent.''

No, I don't believe it. But it does seem like a good way to soften the fall for these two.

Sending McCainiacs Graham and DeWine (check the record) to do a conservative's job is like sending Bobby Knight to a hostage negotiation.

Bart DeWine, maverick from Ohio, was quoted on today's news blaming GW for high gas prices. As I recall, Bart was saying that GW would not go along with some legislation that Bart was proposing to place constraints on oil producing countries.

Its interesting that you mention his wife. This POS was cheating on his wife with his girlfriend, had a baby with her, and when the wife found out - she divorced him.

Now get this - when he went on a bus tour of his district, he brought along his three children and HIS MISTRESS.

If I can figure out how to put a link in, it is here http://blackcincinnati.blogspot.com/2005/03/betty-hull-riding-dewine-family-bus.html that you can check out the info - or just go to Google and type in Dewine Betty Hull.

Pretty low, taking your dad to task in public in order to score political points.

"I wouldn't have voted the way he did,"

That maybe so, but if Ohio conservatives can use this as leverage, then who needs you.

Besides, Brinkman is good.
