A coalition of religious and community groups will launch a drive today to put universal healthcare on the 2006 state ballot, in a proposal that would raise the cigarette tax to buy coverage for more people and would require all but the smallest Massachusetts businesses to cover their workers.
The latest on punitive action against smokers in Massachusetts for your information and dissemination:
"A coalition of religious and community groups will launch a drive today to put universal healthcare on the 2006 state ballot, in a proposal that would raise the cigarette tax to buy coverage for more people and would require all but the smallest Massachusetts businesses to cover their workers.. Under [Uxbridge Democrat state Sen. Richard] Moore's similar proposal, the state would add 50 cents to the $1.51 per pack cigarette tax, a move that might raise as much as $150 million a year.
Much of that money would be used to expand MassHealth, the Bay State's Medicaid program.... Nevertheless, the leaders of the healthcare campaign say there is a moral and religious imperative to make sure that every citizen is covered. Eddly Benoit, a church elder at Dorchester's Temple Salem Seventh Day Adventist Church, said that up to a fourth of the members of that congregation lack health insurance."
MA: Tax Alert.
Tax just smokers (again) to pay for everyones insurance?
Are Mass smoker's fed up yet?

If these Religious "leaders" are so concerned about the lack of coverage of their congregations, let them pay for it by giving up their tax exempt status and start paying taxes like all other businesses.
I'm sure that would more than cover the needs, and since they are so in favor of raising taxes on some people, they will be more than happy to carry their fair share. /sarcasm
I was unaware until now that theft is an approved tenet of the Seventh Day Adventists.
Exactly! And I am so sick and tired of the lawmakers spewing they want a smoke free everything, then they stick it to the people who smoke one more time.
Tell me, just where is all that cigarette tax dollars going that they already get!
To build another $175,000 GOLF COURSE???
Yes! Check that out! How nasty is THIS?!
I know a lot of people believe in the Seventh Day Adventists, but what business is it of theirs or any religious group to get involved in what the state does with taxes? Really upsets me!
It's not just leftist liberals who want to thrust more government control on us. Plenty of people who consider themselves "conservatives" (even religious conservatives), are supporting such Nanny state ideas.

Oh yes! We see it more everyday. The RINO lawmakers sticking it to us. It's gotten way out of hand!
This is just one more tiny little step on the way to all of us having our chips implanted!
I'm not paranoid, folks, just being realistic. If we don't rise up soon, it will be too late.
A lot of people have.
Mad Ted has a stranglehold on New England. It's time for him to GO!
That's the scary part: those damn chips. I know what you mean.
The smoker's tax dollars will probably have to pay for them as well. heh!
How long before people start growing tobacco at home?
I roll my own, that's good enough for me.
There are some in FR that are going to try their hand at growing their own tobacco. But I think it depends a lot on where you live.
I doubt if I could get a "bumper crop" where "I" live. Way up north.
Good or bad?
This is a trial for 08. Watch hillary use this tactic to split the Christian vote. It may work. Be tween a McCain 3rd part and this sort of stuff, we could be in real trouble. that is why they havc to be called out into the open now.
