Mark Steyn: Durbin slanders his own country
Chicago Sun Times ^ | June 19, 2005 | MARK STEYN

Posted on 06/19/2005 2:37:10 AM PDT by mal

Throughout the last campaign season, senior Democrats had a standard line in their speeches, usually delivered with righteous anger, about how "nobody has a right to question my patriotism!" Given that nobody was questioning their patriotism, it seemed an odd thing to harp on about. But, aware of their touchiness on the subject, I hasten to add that in what follows I am not questioning Dick Durbin's patriotism, at least not for the first couple of paragraphs. Instead, I'll begin by questioning his sanity.

Last Tuesday, Senator Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, quoted a report of U.S. "atrocities" at Guantanamo and then added:

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings."

Er, well, your average low-wattage senator might. But I wouldn't. The "atrocities" he enumerated -- "Not only was the temperature unbearably hot, but extremely loud rap music was being played in the room" -- are not characteristic of the Nazis, the Soviets or Pol Pot, and, at the end, the body count in Gitmo was a lot lower. That's to say, it was zero, which would have been counted a poor day's work in Auschwitz or Siberia or the killing fields of Cambodia.

Many old people died in the Chicago Gulags a few summers ago because it's too dangerous to open their windows!!

Don't forget the deaths in the French gulags. Of course, it didn't seem to cause that much of a stir.

Call or write Senator Durbin reminding him that our soldiers are there to serve their country by guarding the prisoners of war, and that they do a pretty good job.

In addition to that, I encourage everyone to contact their Senators and Congressional reps to insist they publicly make a statement on Dick Durbin's treasonous comments, preferably by calling for his resignation or a censure.

"IMHO the people of Chicago sent this idiot to the senate and not the rest of the state."

I lived in Illinois growing up; back then, it was the rest of the State vs. Chicago. Now I fear that the socialist leanings of Chicago have spread much further in Illinois than just that metropolis and Illinois is lost forever.

I just e-mailed Durbin the link to this article! Hopefully it will let him know exactly what true Americans feel about this!

Too bad he's not from South Africa and a particular city - he could be known as the dick from Durban.

And the Dems still wonder just why they are destined to become a permanent minority party...

But he should at least be made a little uncomfortable over what he's done -- in a time of war, make an inflammatory libel against his country's military that has no value whatsoever except to America's enemies. Shame on him, and shame on those fellow senators and Democrats who by their refusal to condemn him endorse his slander.

EXACTLY!

The silence of the rest of his RAT cohorts is deafening. And speaks volumes.

MOnday morning bump to a great Steyn column that puts Durbin's remarks in persepective. He should be thrown out of the Senate.

When the only votes that count come from Chicago, the most corrupt city north of Mexico City, it's not hard to figure out how a vile little crapweasel such as Durbin Laden gets into the US Senate.
