Sens. Kennedy, Corzine & Rep. Weiner Introduce Legislation to Expose Wal-Mart...

-- Wake-Up Wal-Mart's "Make Wal-Mart Care About Health Care" Campaign Helps Sponsor the "Health Care Accountability Act" to Hold Wal-Mart Accountable

On Wednesday, June 22, at 1:45 p.m., Sen. Ted Kennedy, Sen. Jon Corzine and Rep. Anthony Weiner will hold a press conference to announce the introduction of the Health Care Accountability Act (HCAA).

The HCAA will expose a growing and costly national problem of large profitable companies, like Wal-Mart, shifting their health care costs onto taxpayers. Wal-Mart's relentless pursuit of corporate greed has come at a high price for their workers health care. More than 600,000 Wal-Mart workers are not covered by the company's health care plan. Poverty level wages combined with high deductibles, costly premiums and strict eligibility requirements force tens of thousands of Wal-Mart's workers, spouses and dependents onto public health care programs designed for needy families and children.

HCAA will require states to disclose which employers have a high number of employees on public health care assistance, like Medicaid. The Bill will also help determine the extent to which taxpayers are subsidizing the health care costs of large, profitable corporations, like Wal-Mart.

WHAT: Press Conference on the Kennedy-Weiner Health Care Accountability Act

WHERE: Russell Park -- corner of Constitution and Delaware, Washington, D.C.

WHEN: Wednesday, June 22, 1:45 p.m.

WHO: Sen. Ted Kennedy, Sen. Jon Corzine, Rep. Anthony Weiner, Georgia State Rep. Sen. Nan Grogan Orrock, UFCW International President Joe Hansen

BACKGROUND: Wal-Mart, a company with $10 billion dollars in net profit last year, fails to provide health care for more than 52 percent of its 1.3 million workers. In 12 of the 13 states where data has been released and analyzed, Wal-Mart workers rely on public health care, like Medicaid, more than the workers of any other employer.

As a result, in state after state, Wal-Mart is directly shifting its health care responsibilities to American taxpayers. Central to the campaign will be a grassroots effort to build public and political pressure against Wal-Mart to take responsibility for its part in America's health care crisis, as well as a call for legislative action to ensure Wal-Mart -- not taxpayers -- pays its fair share for health care in each and every state.

The "Make Wal-Mart Care About Health Care" campaign is part of a nationwide effort to change Wal-Mart led by wakeupwalmart.com.

WalMart is notorious for treating it's employees like dirt. There's no need for a wasteful government investigation, ask 99% of the people who've ever worked there.

Poverty level wages? Well, the workers will have Teddy and Corzine to thank when they are out of work.

If you read Sam's book, he stated the French were major stockholders. I don't know if this is still true. The French can be wussies about investing in companies that that take out life insurance on their employee's with themselves as beneficiaries. (You'll find that in his book too)

I think it would be highly embarassing to go through life known as "Representative Weiner."

Wal-Mart is directly shifting its health care responsibilities to American taxpayers.

My employer has a health care plan which I am grateful for but when did it become a business responsibility to provide health care.

Right here! I worked there for three summers. It was "full-time" work, and I worked 3pm to midnight 5 days a week.

Sadly, because I was officially on the payroll as a "Seasonal" employee, I was terminated after 89 days each summer. Otherwise, they would have had to start giving me benefits and all. WOUld have been nice to be able to get a few more weeks in some of those times.

Can't say that it was the best job I have ever had, but I have had worse.

I rush to Wal*Mart's defense by pointing out that Wal*Mart is a private, shareholder owned US corporation.

As such it is at Wal*Mart's SOLE discretion as to what benefits they offer their employees.

Fortunately, the Imperial Federal government has not as yet passed legislation forcing private companies to supply health insurance to their employees.

Although I would not be surprised to see legislation like this passed.

Nobody has to work at WalMart. People today whine about accommodations which I would have gladly accepted 30 plus years ago. The company's success is due to it's employees, something must be working. Additionally, there must be a reason the liberals are attacking, and it's not due to their interest in the employees.

You don't have a single idea as to what you are talking about when it comes to the over glorified Walmat.True many employees are part time ,but my wife used to work there and it takes only 28 hours to be considered full time. Also people DO have to work for wallyworld mainly because Walmart has driven all competition out or killed local buisness.Have you ever seen how they work their women employees,I have ,older and even pregnant women are pulling pallets of goods too heavy for two people to move. The insurance is to high for most of the people, only someone being there for a number of years can afford the high cost of Walmart ins.......

It needs to be written into the Constitution that each and every Senator or Representative that is elected has to be able to recite the Constitution from memory, and explain in some detail the meaning of each of the articles and the Bill of Rights.

They should be required to file the video of themselves doing so on the internet before they are allowed to file the petition to run for office. EVERY time they run.
