I'm going to get flamed for this, but I feel that Sesame Street, Nova, and Mr. Rogers are worth the single dollar that each taxpayer contributes to PBS. As someone who grew up watching those shows, I think the contribution they make to educating children is incalcuable, and these days, there are far to few educational programs on TV.

Does it have a liberal bias? Yes. Does that mean it's funding should be cut off because of it? No. Why not try and get them to change some things instead?

Also, I'm a HUGE Red Green fan. :)

I agree...great programming.

But why not start an educational channel and go for sponsorship that is commercial free? It can be done!

PBS was for the days when people didn't have access to cable and everyone had four channels. Apparently, we are subsidizing cable now for the poor, so access solves that problem...

I love Red Green too. He's probably done more for the sale of duct tape than anyone. But shows such as Sesame Street, Clifford, et. and especially now Mr. Rogers have such huge archives that I don't see a need to produce very many if any new shows. Toddlers certainly won't know the difference and what has changed about the alphabet etc.? Our local station reruns all kinds of shows constantly.

And as for support, just check out the underwriters list. That's why you see those "commercials" before and after each program. If they're going to advertise and sell affiliated products, and there are tons of those{check out the toy department}, they can cough up more money. PBS is publicly owned in name only. I would be curious to see an accounting of all monies.
