Putin's trying to put the USSR back together. His selling arms to Venezuela (and to various other enemies of the US) is part of that.

There was an old saying in Turkey -- that Turkey would turn Communist the day after the USSR turned capitalist. :') Neither condition has materialized. ;') There are difficulties in warming up too much. The Slavs outside Russia have no reason to love the Turks, in particular since the Albanian and (former)Yugoslavian Moslems are enemies of the Slavs.

Putin and Turkey have petroleum interests in common. This move is mostly to give Russia some leverage with the rest of the EU.
